the western culture, and the islamic cultures (as presented there) simply cannot be reconciled. I live in Michigan, which has the highest arab concentration in the whole U.S. of A, and they get along fine. Its all about mindset, really.

Let's also say that said foreign power found a way to easily get around that wall, and pour it's entire military might, even though it may be less than America's, into the supply lines keeping the US army active. I can GUARANTEE you that surrender would be the only option, unless you're an idiot and decide to doom your entire nation and it's entire population by fighting to the death.

Even when occupied, the French Resistance fought a brave battle, and provided key intelligence which made the D-Day landings, and the further conquest of France possible.

It affects the entire Western world. Maybe not you in the immediate future, but certainly over the long term.

Interestingly, Modern Marvels covered the Maginot Line last night on the History Channel (rerun but I hadn't seen it). It was pretty interesting to hear how it was incomplete and that they had planned on extending all the way up the Belgium border but the military didn't want to spend the money and they originally thought Belgium was going to help them but then Belgium declared neutrality. They did extend it a little but it was nowhere near the strength of the original line and was the only part that was overrun during the German invasion. The original line held up extemely well.

An old running joke used to be that you never ran across a Frenchman that didn't claim to be part of the French Resistance.

I wish I could remember who it was and what book they wrote, but it was about the expanding population of certain minority groups in europe, mainly those of middle eastern decent. They have a much higher birth rate than the europeans, so at this current rate a large portion of europe (like France) will be mainly arab.

I thought it was pretty interesting, quite a dramatic shift in world demographics, especially in these more advanced western european countries.

The problem being discussed here is not a few "fanatics no one likes". It is the fact that the entire Islamic culture is inherently hostile to the West. This culture believes that it is acceptable to ritually behead infidels, to stab to death a movie director who made a movie "offensive to Islam", to hang charred bodies of infidels from a bridge and cheer, to issue a fatwa encouraging the killing of Salman Rushdie (who wrote a book "offensive to Islam"), to fly passenger planes into buildings, to encourage and promote the practice of suicide bombing, and to otherwise treat people who are not themselves Muslims as inferior beings.

It is also the fact that Islamic culture as a whole here does not want to assimilate into modern European society. These people would rather replace it with their own.

So, ass, you don't see Christians immigrating en masse into predominantly Islamic areas, not assimilating into Islamic society, and promoting intolerance and hatred in that society.

Yes, many of the French fought back in the resistance. And many others went over to the Vichy party.

They've generously contributed one solder to the Iraq efforts.

They snuck out of Vietnam and left their allies- America, primarily- holding the bag. Not that we did all that well there either, but at least we tried for a few years until indecisiveness came to the fore.

I have littler personal rancor for the French- beautiful country, many nice people, unlike the stereotypes about snobbery- but I don't have much respect for their military and political character.

I don't think the common people who are Muslims are hostile to the West. At least here in Canada most of the ones I've met are extremely glad to be in a free country. I work for a Muslim from Bangladesh and he treats me very well. Even though I'm a Jehovah's Witness supporter and he knows that he has no problem with it and he treats me better then all those False Christians (Catholics, Baptists, Evangelical, Mormons, Lutheran etc.).

We just have to watch ourselves. Here in Ontario Muslim men want Sharia law to be the law for them, and, of course, Muslim women don't want that and for good reason. We have to say no to that and tell Muslims they must obey OUR laws except where the law interferes with their ability to worship their god ('Allah' in Arabic). I wonder how you say the real name of God (Jehovah) in Arabic?
