First off, its usually much cheaper to live in a frat than an apartment or dorm. You don't have to worry about driving anywhere to party because the party is usually at your place, or one of the houses next door.

Not true at all. I pay $375/month for my apartment and I only live 1 mile off campus. Most of the frats around here are practically across the street and they charge $475/month + utilities. + membership fees. And believe me my apartment is way nicer than the places they are staying.

i pay the equivelent of $200 a month. My house is nice too (well with the exception of one bathroom)

And wild gay sex.

that wasn't a frat, just a bunch of college guys looking to tag team you.

Depending on which one, a Frat/Sorority can help in networking later on.

While in college the ones I stopped by for parties where awesome.

In my hindsite, I recommend everyone living on campus then migrating to a frat or their own place after. Dorm life on a regular campus (coed) is interesting. Watching a hot chick cook her breakfast then have both hands full as she is carrying it back to her dorm while her towel falls off is a wonderful thing, esp when she asks you if you can wrap it back around her. Don't get it right the first couple times. My biggest regret was being married during my first go around at it. My second time I wasn't but had a steady chick....still I messed around a couple times, being a little older > being the rich kid.

Anyone that can't get laid on a college campus, even while visiting was meant to be celibate.

Meh, Frats are not worth it IMHO. I don't pay for friends and I can network just as well without knowing those people.

Wow, sounds similar to my friend's apartment that doesn't have any furniture.

I wasn't in one (none at my uni), but was tight with friends at another university that started one up. Great parties. It's an 'experience'.

this is true, i was in a frat in college. i loved it, it was a great experience. the common thing you get on here is that you are paying for your friends. Its not like that at all, anyone who is in one will tell u that.

its what the whole college experience is about, getting drunk and doing crazy stuff.

i'd give it a try, if you dont like it you can always just quit.

It must be the immigrant in me talking, but I figured college was about getting an education!

College is an experience, not just a place to get an education.

Fraternities are definately worth it; I'm planning to run for president next year. You guys are seriously all clueless and are just working off stereotypes. Yes there is drinking, yes there are drugs, yes there are bitches, yes there (is probably) hazing, but don't talk about what you don't know.

I have been in frats, I have friends in frats, I see what they do and I know I wouldn't want to be part of it. Thats enough logic for me.

One of my regrets was quitting pledging with about 18 hours to go.

It coems down to what school you go to though. Where I went, if you didn't join a frat, it was pretty boring.

Oh, and the thing about companies liking people because they are in frats and did thigns for the comunity, etc. Total BS. It won't get you anywhere unless a brotehr is employed somewhere that they happen to be looking for a new hire. Very few people get hired that way though.

It teaches you one of the most valuable lessons you can learn - How to make friends and influence people. Plus you get so much more out of college with all the sports, parties and life long bonds you'll form. These bonds and helping each other out will help later in your career.

Because your degree is just a piece of paper and meaningless later in life. But who you know and the ability to maintain relationships, professional and personal, with others trumps any piece of paper.

fair enough, even though you'd never be able to see what really makes a fraternity

I'm in Alpha Phi Omega and I'll tell you it's definitely worth joining. If you want to say frats are simply filled with partying, drinking, screwed up people, that can be true. Certain frats that my friends in are definitely pretty crazy. They are social frats. What do you expect. There are pretty chill people but often there are druggies and what not too. But so what? It's an enjoyable experiecne if you meet the right people right?

APhiO is not a social frat but rather a service frat. It's still a great way to meet people but while we don't party drink and get messed up, we still have social events in addition to the service projects we do.

And paying to be with a bunch of people teaches you friendship better than actually going out and making friends? You can easily have fun, drink, party, meet people, make connections, and enjoy college without being in a frat. If you its something that interests you thats cool, but don't play it off as some savior and joining a frat is the key to being successful.

most that can join a 'real' frat don't have to pay for friends. Nor would they claim it to be there success story.

I haven't been in one as a member, but in big business I have scene that make a deal happen.

Skull and Bones is a big frat.....religion is a frat in a way as well.

I'm just saying that there are many more opportunies by being a member than there are not. Depends on school and chapter of course. But to deny that you have more opportunites socially and professionally when a member of a fraternity is just ludicrous and ill informed.
