I wouldn't pay $2000 or anywhere near that much for it. Plenty of other stuff to go wrong at 289k, regardless of the engine/trans having only 80k.

Wow, for $2k why are you even considering this car? With almost 300k on the odometer will probably be a money pit.

Ask him to do a Carfax then and black out the VIN, send the report to you. Current registration, odo, etc should match with what he's provided.

408 is san jose. If it were 415, I wouldn't mind driving over to the guy's place and steal his VIN for you.

I'd say that's fair, because at the very least I could put it on craigslist for $1000 until somebody buys it just because its a Honda.

The guy is asking way more than it's worth because people assume a Honda will be reliable. It's needed an engine replacement, other parts are bound to be wearing out. This thing is probably going to be a money pit.

Sure, there are quite a few Hondas that pass the 300k mark with ease, but most don't. People don't maintain them, abuse them, or just have bad luck and the car dies. Chances are if you buy a car like this used you're going to get the car that was abused, not the one that was meticulously maintained.

His logic fails because every VIN of every car is in plain view on the plate displayed in the corner of the windshield. It's very strange he won't provide it.

I would guess that this guy is merely clueless instead of dishonest, but I wouldn't want to buy a car from a guy who is that clueless, so I'd walk regardless.

I was checking out a listing for a car on craigslist, I called the guy and asked him to provide the VIN but he refused to provide it to me because he thinks that I'm going to duplicate it. He said that I'm the first person to ever ask him for the VIN of his car he is selling and that "he's just a little guy". I tried to explain to him that on autotrader.com people always provide the VIN for the car and it's perfectly fine to give it out but the guy refused to provide it nonetheless. So, is this guy being paranoid and stupid or is he a liar who is pretending like the car has a clean title but in reality does not. He said he'll give out the VIN if I give him my Social security number.

Pass, the car probably has salvage title or some other brand.

A 96 Honda Civic doesn't sound like it would do so well for a tall guy. Weren't you the one complaining about your current vehicle not having enough headroom or something and asking if that were sufficient grounds to ask for a new car?

If you look up on autos.msn.com you'll find out that the '96 civic is actually got a LOT of head room, so much head room that out of all the vehicles that I've driven, only a few have more headroom and those just so happen to be SUVs. I'd say around 39.5" is plenty of head room considering that I can sorta comfortably fit in a car with around 37" of head room.

Yep... I'd tell him to enjoy his car... no sane person would buy a car from a private seller without checking the VIN.
