Well, some of you may remember my dad 'bought' a 2005 Toyota Echo. The dealership threw a trick by calling us up later and saying we have to pay $1300 extra for an auto or bring one up from eastern Canada for a nominal fee of $600. My dad had already put his down payment on his $15,100 out the door 5 speed base Echo. So this was already ringing warning bells for us.

My dad opted for the automatic. I said later said no, this was unacceptable. So I called the saleslady and explained to her we don't want the automatic. She said OK and will bring up a car from Eastern Canada for $600.

This was 6 days ago. We get a call, my dads new car is ready. He didn't care about the $600, so I didn't force him to care. We go and they say the detailing unfortunately won't be done today but we can do all the paperwork for a pickup early tommorrow. OK, no problem. We write up the contract and such. $15,100...no mention of a $600 importing fee. Right on, I think.

Wrong. Mostly. We go out to look at our new car...it has an automatic. Its covered in retarded decals. Oh, what a bonus...

So I ask well...this is NOT what we were sold and already have the bill of sale for and financed and down payment etc etc etc. So after the finance guy (not being a salesman, not his fault) runs around panicking we wait an hour for them to basically tell us we're sh!t up a tree as it was the sales managers mistake. I ask if this means we have the automatic transmission for free if we choose to opt for it, and they say they aren't sure and to call back later tonight.

Dad calls back, they are still not sure. Call back tommorrow they say.

(Even after I walked from the saleslady she insisted there are no more 2005 Echoes with 5 speeds in Canada. So I guess they must be telling the truth. We don't really want to wait a month for a 2006 and pay 6.2% interest...which they were more than willing to do for us)

I don't know what to do...we have a bill of sale saying we own this car...we could pwn them in court, no?

And yes...I know we should have walked long ago but my dad LOVES the Echo and was pumped to get it and found other options...lacking.

UPDATE...

bottom of this thread

we basically told the toyota dealership that we were pretty much disgusted with this so we got our $1000 back, went to the honda dealership and had the most painless experience i thought even possible. we were in and out including sitting in our new car in less than 45min with $1000 off MSRP!

my family owns something like 5 VW family cars, and the new ones have had zero problems. the 1988 audi is fault free, and the '84 had a few issues, but most '84 american cars are melted down into scrap by now.

but whatever, drive a little sh|tbox.. diesel runs forever, more torque, etc..

regardless, my dad owned an old audi, and will not buy one. same for hyundai. he is an old man, and set in his ways on some things.

so convincing me has little effect in his old man ways

Your dad bought a car. Your dad wanted an automatic. Your dad got an automatic. What is the problem?

VW, no problems? Can you say, cold pack? Those cars leave more people on the side of the road than any that have ever been sold. Sorry bro, but VW is pure sh1t. I almost bought one, because of the thought of gettin german engineering... well, im glad i didnt. I would rather drive american cars than that junk.

Anyway, I'd just back out of the deal if I were you. Wait until a good deal comes around on a 2006 Echo.

Modern automatic transmissions get 99% of the milage manuals do.

This isn't the 70s.

Those are the canadian ratings. I pretty sure the canadain government has a much different system of measuring fuel economy, becuase they rate every car much higher than the US does.

Still, Echo does have the best fuel economy of any non hybrid you can buy.

It'a harder then ever to sell cars these days. If the dealer treats you like this BEFORE he gets your money just imagine how you will be treated AFTER the sale!

I was in a horrible accident in June 2004. It was a 3-vehicle acciden (my Nissan truck, a Toyota van and a Lexus). I was the onlt person able to walk away from the accident. I owned the truck for 10 years and I had it to the dealer only once! The insurance company totalled it so I had to find another set of wheels. I knew what a new Nissan would cost but I wanted to check the Toyota Tocoma so I visited the dealership. I told them I would pay $2,000 more cash for a Tocoma over a Frontier. The tried and tried but they could not do it. I barely made it across the street (the Toyota salesmen did not want to let me go! After 30 minutes on the lot I had test driven the truck and asked for a price. I was quoted $200 less then the lowest price I could find OTD WITHOUT NEGOTIATION!

This is not the only car model available to your dad. Move on and find a dealer who treats you with respect.

End of story ...

Doesn't it depend a lot on how you drive it though? My wife and I both drive stick and we get decently above our rated fuel economy because we drive with intent on saving gas. According to fueleconomy.gov, my I4 Accord with 80k miles is rated at 25/31 and her I4 Neon with 50k at 28/35. I'm getting about 35mpg, and she usually gets about 38mpg. That's just in town driving to work and the grocery store. I won't have the chance to get my Accord out on the highway and see what kind of fuel economy I get until November.

Of course I understand that todays automatic/manual transmissions are much more easily comparable as far as fuel economy goes, since we're no longer talking about something like a 5 speed manual compared to a 3 speed auto with no overdrive and huge parasitic power loss. I'm just saying that it's been my experience that if you're driving a stick with fuel economy in mind, automatics still can't quite keep up in the same regard.
