you do NOT want an Automatic.
Modern automatic transmissions get 99% of the milage manuals do.
This isn't the 70s.
Doesn't it depend a lot on how you drive it though? My wife and I both drive stick and we get decently above our rated fuel economy because we drive with intent on saving gas. According to fueleconomy.gov, my I4 Accord with 80k miles is rated at 25/31 and her I4 Neon with 50k at 28/35. I'm getting about 35mpg, and she usually gets about 38mpg. That's just in town driving to work and the grocery store. I won't have the chance to get my Accord out on the highway and see what kind of fuel economy I get until November.
Of course I understand that todays automatic/manual transmissions are much more easily comparable as far as fuel economy goes, since we're no longer talking about something like a 5 speed manual compared to a 3 speed auto with no overdrive and huge parasitic power loss. I'm just saying that it's been my experience that if you're driving a stick with fuel economy in mind, automatics still can't quite keep up in the same regard.
