I live in the mountain of Western NC. Tropical thing Fred is passing just west of here.

Very little wind, but rain.... 6 - 8+ inches since yesterday... and it's still raining. Over 7" at my house in the last 36 hours.

Two grandsons are firefighters... one working a shift at one department, the other who has all his swift water certs, etc. is on a swift water rescue task force responding wherever needed. Swift water teams from other counties responding.

Roads flooded, roads washed out, bridges washed out, roads covered with landslides, trees on houses, people trapped in their home. The number of trees down is insane, just because of the saturated soil, which of course takes out power for a lot of people.

Fred made landfall just west of us and we had maybe a 1/2" rain and a stiff breeze. We were lucky this time.

Grew up in L.A. A 3" day was rare, but I loved them, partly because rainy weather wasn't common (~12" average yearly rainfall). I don't think I've experienced more than that ever. Usually less than 2". Even 1" isn't common here in the Bay Area on a single day. Of course, not a drop since maybe April I'm thinking this year. I saw that it's the driest it's been since 1977.

Well now I sit here in the dark, typing on my phone, which I hate. 10s of thousands in the dark, no fix ETA.
We have elevation on our side, 300+ feet above the city, but can listen to scanner while both grandsons are out there working as fire & rescue.

I live just across the hill from you in eastern TN. Yeah - the amount of rain we've gotten over the past couple of days is staggering.

Especially compared to July. If you have a garden, get ready for the blight!

With all that water forced on them, I bet all the hippies in Asheville are cleaner than they've been in years.

Power went out at 7:30 last night. Duke hopes to have it back on by midnight. Can't wait to open refrigerator and freezer.

Neighboring county, 30 people unaccounted for.

Beautiful day today, mid 70s clear and sunny.

On my shopping list is a generator, gotta determine which one I want, where to keep it, how to use it, set up, may need help from an electrician to do that. Cost appears to be anywhere from maybe $600 to $3000, maybe more if have to pay electrician. Food not going bad is at top of list for reasons. Here, it won't be a flood. Earthquake is the concern that comes to mind here, very very real possibility.

They have a bunch of multi-fuel options. If you can find one that does propane and gasoline, that may be a good option. The advantage of gasoline is that it's readily available and relatively cheap per gallon. The advantage of LP is that it doesn't have ethanol and is much cleaner than gasoline.

About 15 years ago I spoke with a few people that had owned Honda Civic GX's. Basically, it's Honda's CNG cars from that era. They were telling me about how great it was that they could drive for thousands of miles and when they changed the motor oil in the car, it still looked clean. There just weren't many carbon deposits in the motor oil. I'm guessing from that an LP generator may last a really long time, but you'll still want to run it every few weeks to keep it maintained. Might be worth researching.

Yeah, maintenance is an issue. If gas, you need an additive and I think have to change out the gas periodically anyway. I think I heard draining the carburetor is something you need to do too.

I figure it's for emergency, not something I'll actually be using periodically. I suppose camping with it is a possibility, something to consider. But right now, I'm not doing any camping, but would like to.

When you say LP, you mean propane?

There's a Reddit thing just for generators that I subscribed to.

I looked at one several years back. A system that would be convenient, and take little effort. Self-starting, switch over, with adequate fuel for long outages, thus probably LP since we don't have natural gas in my hood.

Would be a great convenience, but for the few times it is actually needed for extended outages, not enough bang for the buck. We got power back just a little while ago, so 20+ hour outage, an exception. Probably made worse, as this was not predicted. When storm are forecast, typically winter with snow and ice, power crews from neighboring states are pre-staged. None of that this time as it was far worse than anticipated. And to call it a storm is still a stretch... just lots of rain. No wind to speak of, never exceeding 20 MPH.

We have lost food, and the bears are going to live trash day, but not enough to even file insurance, and many many times less than the cost of even the most basic generator.

Of course, I have heat for cold weather, when most occur. Two wood stoves, and wood.

We just caught the edge of Fred today here in Western PA. Rain totals are nowhere near what those farther South got though.

I got a small generator this year. I only want it for the sump pump and fridge. Gasoline, and I get non corn gas for my small motors, so I have plenty on hand, and it gets cycled out. Haven't used it yet aside from starting it to see how it works, and it seems to work pretty well. Easy to start, and very quiet.

This is the one I got. I paid $385, but this is still a good price...

Well we were due, we haven't had a 100-year flood since 2004 when hurricane Ivan came through here.

I hate to make light of this, as there are now 35 people missing in a neighboring county.

35 missing is tragic. Is that what they were showing on the news with a river basically flowing through a neighborhood or what? I'm just trying to figure out how 35 can't be located unless they were swept away.

They don't give a lot of detail, but more likely people that live along creeks in coves and rural areas. In these coves a creek that you can easily jump across can take out roads, bridges and houses when enough rain falls just up the cove. Part of the problem is the roads are gone, so they can't even get back into some of these areas.

Connecticut lucked out this time around with only the NW corner of the state looking to get clipped by the heavy stuff. Supposed to be some heavy rain tonight but more like normal-heavy not tropical-downpour heavy.

Current radar of the system is pretty impressive though!
