The majority of those throwing rocks and smoke grenades at the police appeared to be young men and the violence caused the University of Maryland, Baltimore to close early.

Initially appearing to struggle to contain the demonstrators, police tactical teams arrived and they were pelted with bottles and rocks and the Baltimore Sun reported that 'several' officers were injured.

The clashes followed a widely circulated flier promising a 'purge' at 3pm to start at Mondawmin Mall which would end downtown.

The popular meme is based on the movie, 'The Purge' which imagines a lawless city.

University of Maryland Baltimore's website said it was closing early based on advice from police.

We're going through a painful transition period right now. When the dust settles, we'll have police departments that will only be able to attract the worst of the worst and that are also unwilling to do their job. We'll also reap the rewards of a much more lawless society.

So, patience should be the order of the day until we reach that point.

For the well connected and very wealthy the law does not matter now.

Large corporations, higher political office holders, and law enforcement personal are minimally prosecuted if at all.

Historically this tends to end badly.

As long as a large corp. can pay a small fee (fine) without anyone being guilty of a crime. When LEO's harass, beat, and kill citizens with only a token punishment. When congressional reps. can take bribes and gifts for favours. People are going to be upset.

There are people who will use any excuse to riot and destroy.

And there are people who will remain calm and peaceful till they just can't take it any more. I think with the instant connectivity in today's world these people are going to become more and more outspoken. I hope if the tipping point comes they will find a productive way to work on a solution. The alternative is too horrible to think about...

Of course the best solution would be for the legal and political systems to clean themselves up.

Police officers are still U.S. citizens and as such are protected by the 5th amendment. People know what happened, they are just not required to share their knowledge with you at this point in time.

Some of you are more open about your feelings towards us than others.

And some choose to see what they want to see. A lot of topics gets discussed in this forum. You typically pop in only when there is a racially charged incident. Hence that limited exposure shapes your opinions in ways that may not be an accurate representation of the whole of the forum.

And some of us don't believe this is an us versus them situation, you and I are not opponents.

Well there obviously is a reason or are reasons because we don't know but I fail to see that as an excuse for looting, arson and thwarting the efforts of the FD to protect life and property. Reports are that these are young people between the ages of 15 and 19 so I think we need to take that into account. Young minds are known to not be fully developed when it comes to making decisions that require judgment.

On another note, the mayor of Baltimore just referred to the rioters as thugs on live TV. She did this just seconds ago. Good thing she's not white or these folks would have another excuse to continue to destroy their city.

Actually, I am fairly active on this forum and have been in the past. My post count would probably be way lower if I only logged on to talk about black issues. Its not really my fault though that some of P&Ns most popular subjects are Obama, Black People, Liberals. Those get the most attention here...also, since minorities are well...a minority here on P&N, I feel that its my personal duty to participate in these discussions. Ive been here a few years now and I have seen some of the worst of P&N, luckily, most of those posters are somewhere else.

I didn't say that. Must you marginalize my opinion/questions by pretending like I'm saying we should riot and loot because we aren't getting answers?
