FREE : 10GB Online File Storage (NOW 25GB)

I have about 3.5GB of digital photos I have backed up on one internal HDD and one external HDD as well as on DVD (occasionally). I also wanted a way to back them up remotely (outside my house) since all the backups reside at the same location. Looking around I found www.streamload.com.

You get 10GB (NOW 25GB) of free online storage. With the free account you are limited to ~100MB of downloads per month, IIRC, but I don't plan on downloading unless my house burns down or something and at that time I can just upgrade my account in order to download my backups. This free account is perfect for an online remote backup, IMO.

Backing up all my folders & pictures & mov's was quick by just dragging a dropping my 'My Pictures' folder into the 'Streamload Uploader' utility you can download. Works great although it will take me somewhere around 20 hours to upload all my files.

There doesn't appear to be any upload limits, just on download.

Freeloader account limits

Downloads. Freeloaders may only download 100 files or 100 MB, whichever comes first, per month.

File size. Freeloaders cannot download any file greater than 10 MB. Note, you may upload and store files greater than 10 MB to test our service, but you will not be able to download these files until you purchase a Download Subscription.

Storage. Freeloaders have 10 GBs of storage.

File hosting. Freeloader accounts cannot host files.

Email Links. Freeloader accounts cannot send email links.

Files per message. Freeloaders can send 100 files per message.

Wrong. As I stated in the original post, the 100MB monthly limit only applies to downloads.

If you're uploading a bunch of small files, put them in an archive to get around the 100 file download limit. Couldn't hurt to encrypt it while you're at it.

BTW, my 3.5GB upload crapped for some reason after about 6 hours. I was using their upload utility. After I restarted it, it remembered where it was and continued the upload with no losses. Very nice.

so if you were to upload 10gb worth of backups in 10mb archived increments... one day your computer melts down and you want to retrieve it all back. if you're too cheap to pay for an account and want to freeload all the way to get your backups back:

10gb storage
divided by
100mb a month
........

should only be about 100 months before all your data is restored

You used to be able to give people access to your uploaded files and they could download them (as much DL as they paid for).

Dunno if it is still used for that. Just thought i'd share

Wish I knew how reliable and long-term these guys would be around. Also wish I knew how reliable their security was. This would be great for archiving things like school assignments, tax documents, etc. but I don't know if I would trust some of these things to a company like this...

You could always encrypt your backups if your worried about security.

Essentially they only charge if you need to retrieve the stuff. If you lost your stuff and you knew that by paying you could get it all back, you'd probably pay for it, it would be cheap at the price in that situation Much cheaper than paying someone to do data recovery on a broken hdd.

Since hard drives are one of the most frequently failing components of a computer (aside from crappy PSU's) because of the moving parts, I dont think they will have any problem running out of people who need backups. Storage is cheap nowadays, BW isn't. So I imagine they will be able to survive quite a while on people uploading backups for free and paying to retrive them.

This is becoming an increasingly popular option even with businesses (although they would probably choose a differant more premium service), it lets them have an offsite backup. Its the wave of the future

Oh ALSO, ppl at college and out of state (or out of country) can upload pics for free. Then the parents/relatives can pay to d/l and view them.

This is actually a pretty decent business model now that I think about it.
