Here's the history of Sierra Mist.
7UP was marketed and distributed by Pepsi but was owned by Dr Pepper.
Based on the huge response of 7UP, Pepsi decided to create their version called Sierra Mist and cancelled any contracts with Dr Pepper to distribute and market 7up.
Actually, 7Up itself a product of Royal Crown Cola, (RC Cola), not Dr. Pepper. Dr Pepper itself is also a product of RC Cola. RC Cola broke DrP and 7Up away as their own company because RC Cola has been failing for years now. Pepsi had no connection with 7up. Why would Pepsi market and distribute a product which competes with their own lemon-lime Slice?
Also, You may have noticed that lemon-lime Slice is all but non-existant. L-L Slice was Pepsi's competitor to Coca-Cola's Sprite. It's sales sucked, so Pepsi killed the Lemon Lime Slice Line and a month later introduced Sierra Mist as their competitor to Sprite.
Sierra Mist is undoubtedly the underdog, because Sprite has been an established name for decades now. Hence, Pepsi's efforts to promote SM through sales, coupons and free samples at every turn, especially in areas where teenagers are the common demographic, such as around colleges... When SM first launched, there were free sample booths at every store within 2 miles of my college for weeks, as well as at all the college basketball games and on the campus itself.
I may be wrong about the company's connections, but I'm just bored
