I did this once. You should see how ticked they get when you say "no thanks." Man...they practically lock the doors until you sign some sort of agreement.

I just moved and my apartment has no gym so i want to try out ballys. But ive heard only horror stories about these guys harrassing you into joining, and constantly making billing mistakes (in their favor) on your charge cards.


Any tips on how to join one without a hassle? (or a better company in L.A. area to try out?)

Read about Bally's Health Clubs in this month's "Smart Money" Magazine. Not a very positive article to say the least. I think that instead of it being a hot deal, it should be listed as a raw deal.

I bought my lifetime membership off someone on that e-gay site for like 400 bucks and 24 dollars a year in dues... I can honestly tell you I used it for a few months then became to lazy after that... I have the membership for life and never really had any problem with the gym I actually liked it... these horror stories are probably true if you try to buy a membership through them though

Be careful about Bally's.

The newest or a recent issue of Worth or Smart Money magazine has a highly negative article about the way Bally's pressures people into signing expensive contracts that are nearly impossible to break. At the very least, don't give your credit card or bank account number to them or they may never stop charging you.

I got a friend to do this before. Every time I took him with me, they would hassle him into signing up. He ended up not using the entire two weeks, since they would spend 30 minutes everytime trying to sell him a plan. It's definitely not worth it.

This deal has been going on for years, and not just them. They all do it. One had a gimmick contest to win a Year free. That was the only prize mentioned. Then they call you up and tell you your a runner up and win 2 weeks. Then they bug you every day after the first to get you to sign up. Bet no one wins the one year. I did take the 2 weeks. Ignored the loser muscle punks telling me I really need to get a "program" started. Place was crowded. All the good machines had a wait to jump on. Pool was suck. Not deeper than 4 foot so they wouldn't need to keep a guard by it. If you live close to one, may be worth the hassle to lead them on like you are going to join. Then cut them off

you are right... i called them to check on their prices about 2 weeks ago and the rep on the phone keeped on pressuring me to sign up but i just told her i wanna see the place first. she scheduled me down to talk to her the next day and i just decided not to go. she didnt want to give me the price and said i have to go in and then she will tell me...
