I don't believe you can format it anything besides FAT in windows. You may be able to format it as other file systems under linux though.

I used HP usb program and i formmated it to NTFS before I shorted

I meant with the built-in windows format utility, AFAIK.

windows no program yes

It's 4:24am, what are you doing up still?

i formated mine as ntfs and FAT 16, fat32 is also an option for me...

Right click my computer, manage, disk management right click drive choose format... sleect type, my xp box gives me fat32 and fat
my 2k box gives me ntfs and fat...

I initially had it formated as ntfs avail space was only 29 after that... it was "used" space and showed as such in windows pie charts... but no files were on it... ntfs overhead on a 32 meg drive is too much to be useful

Just did

"hofozone said:

Steps for a successful R10 jump:
(1) unplug the key
(2) short R10
(3) keep it shorted, insert into USB port
(4) keep it shorted, the LED will blink, wait until LED is off
(5) keep it shorted, unplug the key
(6) remve the paperclip
(7) insert the key back to USB port, there will be only one driver showing up
(8) format it"

And it worked for me on the first try! Thank you all

WooT!
i got it to work.. i shorted out R10 and BC5 at the same time.. drive restarted and Windows dected a 25X drive, in My Computer still shows up as a removeable disk, just needed to format it, managed to get 30.4MB..
For those worried that they might "kill" the drive, I wouldnt worry much. I first tried what was suggested in the thread, shorting out R10, but after many unsuccessful trials (as much as 20 i believe), I pretty much started to short almost every other resister on the board, yet still the IBM software kept coming up. After reading over at FW, I shorted out R10 and BC5 while the drive was plugged in. Had to do it twice, first time it erased the data, then the second time it made only one drive recognizable, formated it and got 30.4MB.

The light on mine is still stuck on. The only thing that pops up "still" when the usb drive is inserted, is a removable (Q) drive. It says no media is inserted. Can't format one of those. I don't know what else to try.

Did you try any of the methods described in this thread?

is there no software solution? I don't really love the prospect of shorting out fuses...

Yup, tried them all and experimented on my own. The units acted "Dead" ever since the light decided to stay on. Bummer, I thought I was making progress.

No software solution. IBM knows better than to let some software overwrite their advertisements

Look at the picture I linked to in this thread, and rake a small piece of tinfoil over the resistors circled in the picture. That's what worked for me. It may take a few minutes or longer, but it should start blinking again.

They aren't fuses.... if you short a fuse, it blows and has to be replaced.

They are resistors, and what everyone is describing is shorting the trace, by taking the resistor (temporarily) out of the circuit... this causes the circuit to reset to "factory new" state.. thus erasing data (or the FAT) forcing a reformat, which allows access to the entire drive!

BTW, did anyone try "fdisk" on one of these???

To those that are giving up on this don't. I was about to after fussing with this thing on and off for 4 days and numerous failed attemps, but I finally got it too work. I tried shorting R10 and I ended up with the solid red light. I just persisted and continued to short R10 until it worked. I did get it to start blinking and then I populated it and tried to format and I got the write protected error. I started over again and eventually got it to blink again and this time I was able to populate and format the drive. Just keep trying.

fdisk'ing without shorting the resistors out does nothing. The partitions automatically re-appear. I tried it in linux.

I got mine at home, wife ordered same day at work and is still waiting for her's.

5 min of "touching" with a paperclip and mine was ready to format to 30.7 MB.

32 MB is just enough to get me hooked on the concept, now I want MORE.

If there is an order I don't know what it is. Just rake over R10 repeatedly until you get it. It took me 4 days to get it to work. I spent way too much time on this thing, but it became personal and I won!
