free 5 port switch After buying $20 nic @ Compusa

Looks like you buy the over-priced Nic card at $20 and get the 5 port switch for free after rebates.

not too bad of a deal.
(Especially if you need more bandwith for LAN parties)

Looked up the compusa sku number vs the mfr part number and it seems to be the $50 retail

Anyone have this switch? I'm looking for a good quality switch to take with me to college. Does this have a fan-I want one without a fan, as it will be in my dorm room. If this does have a fan, anyone have a reccomendation for a good swtich that does not have a fan (10/100, 5 port minimum, something like 8 ports or 12 would be preffered. Thanks.

I don't believe I have ever seen one of these home consumer network switches with a fan

I bought one today, cuz I saw it, and I needed a switch.
It's a pretty nice one. It's nice because you can put in an Uplink network cable from another hub/router/switch (router in my case) in any port, and it will auto detect it. It is plastic, but really small (5-7" i'm guessing).

IF YOU BUY ONE, CHECK THE TOTAL! When I went to checkout, it rang up at about $75 (70 +5 tax). I thought, wait a minute, since it's $50 + $20 - $20 instant, so they had to do it again, and it rang up at $50. Make sure to check!

Pretty immature attitude for a "Golden Member"

A friend of mine has a 12 port SMC switch (10/100) and he says he's lucky to get 2000k/s out of it (2mbyte/s). He hasn't determined if it's the switch or cables or something else on the network. Hence this is why i was asking. I have an intel switch w/ a fan and the fan is slowly dying which causes an annoying buzz. I can pull roughly 8-9 mbytes/s on that switch, and if it can get near that, then I would be happy.

I bought it with the intention of returning it if it turned out to be a piece of crap switch. I like it, it's very small, and I did a simple test with this and my intel InBusiness switch. On my intel switch i got 7.2Mbyte/s via ftp from my FreeBSD 4.3-Stable to my XP Pro machine. On the SMC switch I got 7.9 mbytes/s. The only downside I noticed is that I have my switch on the floor, and I really can't tell what the status of networking equipment because the LEDs look to be sunken into the switch; So if you really want to know what the status of the switch is, you have to have it roughly eye-level. I also found out my freebsd machine was running in half duplex mode..

The NIC, on the other had is a real piece of junk. It uses a realtek chipset, I don't have the NIC anymore but I did a quite google on the chipset, and I just heard complaints, more on the "Poor performer" side than anything. So don't expect to have the NIC perform.

PS: the Network cards I used for my experiment was a 3com 3c905TX-M and a 3c905TX-NM, both Rev B.

Regarding the fans on switches: some of the older D-Link switches had fans. My LinkSys 5-port does not, and I'm pretty happy with it overall. Very small and non-intrusive.

If your switch is only getting 2mb then there is either a problem with something else, or the hub is faulty. You shouldnt be asking whether the switch sucks in general, but rather its reliability. All switches are made to run close to their rated speed. If it doesnt, then its a faulty or defective item and they wouldnt be sold.

This one (at Buy.com for $35.00) is small. You can fit it in your shirt pocket. It has 5 ports, detects uplink automatically so you can use any of the 5 ports as the uplink, oh yeah, no fan also!
