Does anyone know if sku #271906 (64mb sodimm memory) will work in any laptop or is it really limited to just HP, Sony, Toshiba...models? I have a Ashton Digital Laptop. Its a generic brand with a 500mhz celeron. Thanks. And does anyone know yet if you can buy from the website and use the rebate froms?

kafka, your post was pointless (j/k). I got sku 280956 also. After they ran out first thing Sunday they put me on a "commit" list. When I went back today they said they were given the ok to use the 280956 ram as replacement for the other stuff so they held two for me. Both have Infineon chips HYB39S128160CT-7.5 which I understand run PC133 333. Both boxes are CompUSA branded PNY memory. Based on other previous posts it looks like ours may be different in some way but I don't know how different.

Hankysmoo - there was never a question about buying from the website and getting the rebate honored. The rebate form says that you must buy the ram from CompUSA. It doesn't specifically say it has to be "in store". If you buy from the website, and send in the form, you should be fine.

One thing to be conscious of - the rebate must be postmarked within 14 days of the end of the promotion, which is the 19th.

Just found out when I got home. Compusa, instead of giving me 2 64MB ram, they gave me 2 128 Mb ram (by mistake) for 30 each. I can not do the rebate because of the UPC.
So is 128Mb for 30 a good deal?

sheww.. Just spent over an hour (more like 2) filling out rebate forms, scanning proof of rebates/UPCs, printing receipt copies and addressing and stamping envelopes. From all the FREE stuff from CompUSA I have 9 separate things to mail out tomorrow. That'll teach companies to make rebates so exact... hoping the consumer will be disgusted and forget about applying for the rebates. Now I just hope the money comes on back soon, so I can do it again next holiday. Only in America!

Well, sam, it all depends on how you look at it. 256MB of PC133 RAM for $60 + tax with no rebate is a good deal. On the other hand, 128MB of PC133 RAM for $0 + tax with rebate is also a good deal. It's up to you.

Sam you can go back and return only one for the rebate and keep the other one.128+64 MB memory for only $30 it won't be a bad deal at all.

Gee Sam I'd install the memory, send in for the rebate and raise hell if they don't honor it!

i also have the 280956 ram. seems like my compusa had quite a bit of it left. in fact, when i was there today returning the soundcard (no good win2k drvers... grrr...) there were people still walking out with bags of ram. i assume the free kind.

oh yeah, its single sided RAM, so its only half a bank. i think. so you need to install both single sided in the last couple of slots AFAIK.

hey all,
went out and picked up a 64 megger for my Dell (I3800 PIII 600). Wow!!!! Wow!!!! Doh!!!!
I have no idea what the specs on the ram are, cas2? or 3?. I know my dell came with cas2, but I can't find any info on the chip on the pny web site (I can't even find an instance of any of the numbers on the packaging). Popped it in and all runs smoothly but I'm concerned with the possible latency increase and any possible instability. (Can't tell if there are any issues at the moment 'cause I'm running ME - so crashing is the norm. - But thats what the 64 is for - Win2K!!!)

'Bought 2 sticks of 133mhz. I a picked up the rebate coupon as I was getting ready to leave. I read it and saw that it said one $ 30.00 rebate per customer . I went back to the manager and the area manager who happened to be at this store and was told to send a copy of the ad which stated 2 per customer and everything would be OK. We'll see.

BTW- the rebate form states its OK to oblierate CC info for security(I presume this means CC#, exp date, auth# are OK to mark out) Any Compusa rebate experts here have any guidance ?

Thanks

And another wrinkle.....a note on t**hbargains site says send in 2 rebate forms ( separately?) . What a confusing mess.

Vermiculite - And anybody else who bought the modem

The rebate form for the BestData Mach2 56k modem (the one that was free after rebate) says to send in the ORIGINAL sales receipt. I quote from the back of the form:

Rebate must include ... original dated sales receipt (copies will not be accepted).

The parenthesis and underlining are theirs. It also says "original sales receipt" on the front of the form. This was the only rebate that I saw that said you had to send in the original.

Just a heads up for everyone so they don't lose $30 on a technicality.

I got 2 64 MB PC133 RAMs from the local CompUSA store, and as I thought they were backwards compatible with my HP Pavilion 8655C desktop (128MB PC 100 original SDRAM) but they wouldn't work!!! I don't know why and get really screwed Anybody know why please tell me, thanks a lot.
PS I called the customer center of HP and HP rep said it ONLY takes PC100 RAM, but I think it's a lie.

In looking through this thread there are a lot of posts asking for info about who or why this ram does or doesn't work. There are also a few post with some simple answers and suggestions. Why so many questions and so few answers?

Because this is a "HOT DEALS" forum. This is not the "TECHNICAL SUPPORT" or "GENERAL HARDWARE FORUM".

Most of the folks who troll this forum are looking for "HOT DEALS". If you're looking for tech support you may have better luck posting your queries in the proper forum. Good luck!

While I agree that in general, tech support questions should go in another forum, it seems to me that since multiple posters have said that it is backward compatible and should work and the memory was obtained via the information in this thread that it almost makes more sense to have it here, where other people with the same RAM might be having the same problems.

I was told by Compusa manager that they would stand behind 2 per customer rebates on the memory. I hope that P O Box 9077 in Coppell, TX is huge because they're going to get overwhelmed with mail.

1 - The rebate center told me they WOULD NOT honor Comp USA's 2 per househould limit. . .that is a CompUSA issue.

2 - CompUSA in Albuquerque is providing refunds for the purchase and tax of the second stick. . .charging 1 cent for some accounting reason which is fine by me. I'd strongly suggest you try to get your money back from your local store because a rebate seems most unlikely.

I could not get ahold of the rebate center today to reconfirm since they probably received a number of calls after mine (Monday morning) and could change their stance.

So far, everybody I've spoken to at CompUSA (local and 1-800-COMPUSA) told me that we could get 2 rebates, but the 2 people I contacted at PNY said the limit was 1 per customer. But today, at 12:44PM Mountain Time, Sammy at PNY said the limit was 2 despite what was written on the rebate form, and this was a change in policy from a day or 2 ago because they knew about the CompUSA newspaper ad.

Update: Being the obsessive compulsive that I am (and having been burnt by weasels at other companies who gave me wrong information and then lied about it), I phoned PNY again, and at 2:23 PM Trisha said that each customer was eligible for 2 rebates. I didn't even ask her this; I simply mentioned that my call was about the CompUSA memory rebate.

We had a long line here in San Diego. The manager told us that only one per customer will be rebate but the store will sell two for $30 which he felt that is cheap price!! And remember no refund after 14 days! as it said on the received.

When I got to CompUSA they didn't have the original rebate. So they were giving out some copies. I grabed one with RAM and when I got home.... I relaized that the copy is so bad that I can't read the address of where to send it!! Can someone PLEASE post the address on the rebate or scan a copy for me.

Thanks.

I explained to a CSR at CompUSA that I was told 2 rebates per person by a manager. Then when I called the rebate center they said one per person just like it said on the rebate form. I then handed him the 2 extra upc's and asked for a instore credit. He took them and told me just a minute. He came back with a 60.00 gift cert. I went home happy
