<< NiCd is worse than NiMH ? >>

Well, for one thing, NiCd are usually rated at around half the power fo NiMH. Another thing is that they have memory. So if you have a 6 hour battery, use 3 hours of it, recharge it, you'll only get 3 hours of use unless you discharge them first.

Go to the second link that jimmyhaha posted. You'll be on the 4th page of a thread on their message board. Go back to first page and write down the coupon code. Then you have to call the 1-800 number posted there and tell them the item # of the batteries (443-392). After the person has all your info don't forget to tell them the coupon code. You'll end up paying $5.08 for s/h.

I believe that, when comparing the same size NiCd/NiMh, the NiCd can push out more power to a device at one time but overall holds less power than a NiMh. NiCd is thus a better replacement for regular batteries when the device draws a lot of power. I'm stating all this from my limited knowledge gained through electric remote control airplanes. You get better flight time from NiMh but the NiCd gives you more power (but for less time).

Yes, Nicad has memory. I remember I used to put almost drained NiCad in a flash and let the juice used up completely before I recharge. It was a sin when the instruction never mention anything about the memory problem. A few low end cordless phones are still using NiCad, and the battery cannot hold up after a few weeks of use? The battery manufacturers claimed up to 1000 charges, and I was lucky to have more than 20 times for these AA, C, and D Nicad batteries.

I used to read an article about putting high voltage across the battery to zip it once a while to 'get rid' of the memory problem. Forgot about the detail but never tried it. Nowadays, the battery chargers for some high end cordless handtools has a 'conditioning' function to address the memory problem.

Would like to hear expert address the rechargeable batteries memory problem. Does it happen to the newer type rechargeable too? What about those for the laptop batteries that has a fancy name like ion or whatever etc.

If you want the best power and long lasting capability of your NiCAD batts, then you MUST discharge them fully before recharging. If you race R/C you know this to be gospel.

If your battery still has a memory problem after a full discharge, then you MAY be able to undo it by connecting the positive lead to the negative (ZAPPING), but you will damage the cells slightly and there is no guarantee that you'll fix the memory problem. Best thing to do is throw it out and get another (there goes your environment-friendly battery).

not quite an expert, but i kind of into batteries... nimh and li-ion batteries don't have memory effect. that's why i love them so ni-cad and their memory effects completely turned my parents off of rechargable batteries. they feel they were ripped off, for the same reason you mentioned. i dunno about hobbyists that play with airplanes and stuff, but as far as dig camera usage goes, i think nimh is the best choice. or li-ion if your camera works with them...

Bah...NiCads have their issues; they certainly aren't perfect...but I've been using the same NiCads (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V) that I have been using for 20 YEARS (no exaggeration). They are still suitable for my purposes. For high-drain applications (digital cameras, MP3 players, etc.), you definitely will not want to use nickel-cadmium batteries, but they are fine for radios, flashlights, remote controls, etc. For my digital camera, I bought the highest-capacity NiMHs that I could find - 1800MaH.

i actually got this a few weeks back, and i can honestly say that it's not even worth the $5 shipping i paid. the charger is really quite horrible, it's actually a POS. the batteries are ok but there's no life in them, they die so fast in my digital camera. no point in using the damned thing really.
