Free Amex blue card reader

American Express is giving away the card readers free again. Not sure how long this has been going on, but last time I checked (few months back) it was $30

in general they always give away the serial reader, (this hasnt been posted here for some time though)

i got it but never used it, but still hot if you want a smart card reader.

Would love to pick up a free USB reader sometime. I still have the Serial version new in it's box since the Blue card started. What was that.. 1997? If you can find a way to get the USB version, I'm game. Haven't seen a link or info along those lines.

I have the serial but haven't been able to get it to work. I don't know if it's worth shelling out the $25 for the USB. Wish that was free.

i have the serial version too
just emailed them so I can get a new version of their software (with winxp supported)
still waiting for their responce

did anyone just try putting the serial in and winxp automatically detecting it?

i wonder when will they have their USB version free? (maybe when they have a firewire version out in a few years?)

What would be the point? It's not like reading some data off of your blue card is that bandwidth intensive.

I got the serial version but could not get it installed. My PDA connection was interfering with the serial port and thier tech support could not get things set properly. They actually got me to a point where I could not boot up Windows. I had to go into DOS and replace some DLLs that they had me delete. Not worthe the hastle.

the card reader is useful because it will generate unique, one time use credit card numbers for you, so you never have to worry about CC fraud with purchases made over the net.

You can also generate a private payments number here without the reader. IMO it is a pain in the @ss to go get your card everytime you want a private payments number (Especially here ijn the hot deals forum!)

On a side note, the AMEX reader is a standard smart card read and has manuy other uses (some unethical).

I got the serial version to work in my WinXP and WinME system. For WinXP, you will need a newer driver from the manufacturer of the smart card reader. Check the bottom of the reader and you will find the model #. If you install the WinNT/95 setup from Amex, you will get an error everytime you startup WinXP.

Although I got the reader to work, it won't recognize my Blue, so I just uninstall it.

I got the USB reader to work with Windows2000.

First I got the Smart Card Driver from GEMPLUS Link Fixed
I used the GRC 435 drivers.

Then I installed the American Express Card Reader software. Everything seems to work fine. Don't know why
American Express is dragging their feet to update their stuff.
