Amex originally wanted us to use the reader and the digital wallet program together for the private payment and easy checkout like msn passport, but the program is buggy, and they also let you to use private payment alone, so they finally killed that program, then the reader became useless.

The given link is busted, when you try to login it kicks you back to your previous page. I guess American Express doesn't feel like giving out anymore smart card readers.

Tonix: Where did you find Drivers for the 435? I only see 410, 413, 430, and 433.

Please turn your PM on.

I ordered one earlier this week before this thread was posted. AMEX has a faulty web page that kept telling me I had to register my Blue card even after I had already registered it and followed links from my login to get to that error page. I called customer service and was told that if I was accessing the site using Windows 2000, I would incorrectly get this result instead of an error page stating that the free serial wasn't available for Windows 2000. Since I also use Windows 98, I went ahead and requested the reader, which arrived the next day by Airborn Express.

Drivers currently available at the link provided earlier still don't support Windows 2000 or XP for the version of the reader supplied. Similarly, no drivers for the First USA version of the smartcard reader to support these operating systems ...

<< ...so you never have to worry about CC fraud with purchases made over the net. >>

Why do you worry? AMEX should be the one worried about fraud - in all its forms! They picked up that risk when they signed you up.

I could not get the card reader to work under Windows 2000, using the Win2k default Gemlink drivers, so I gave up and installed it on a Windows 98 machine. The wallet feature is dead.

The card reader is still useful. I have it working where it prompts me to insert my card and *then* gives me the number. I wonder if this is any safer encryption method than the normal way of getting the number:

Who knows?

Private Payments works ok for me, and i don't have to lug a reader from computer to computer (or laptop).
The "wood rating" on this reader is that it's free.

"
In response to your E-mail, attached below for your easy reference.
Thank you for your e-mail to American Express in reference to the drivers for Windows XP that support the Smart Card Reader.
Unfortunately, the Smart Card Reader is not currently compatible with Windows XP.
We are hoping to make Windows XP drivers to support the Smart Card Reader available in the near future.
I do apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Thank you for your email.

Sincerely,

I work in technologies at AXP, I can confirm that online wallet has been decommissioned as of about a month ago or so. May be a few stragglers out there. Private Payments is good to go, tho. It's getting a _lot_ of traffic these days.
