Free Antivirus Program ending soon (InnoculateIT)

Got an email today that cai.com is ending their "free-for-life" InnoculateIT antivirus program on June 7th. However, they will continue to support it with free antivirus updates as long as it's installed on your pc. So, get it before June 7th at http://antivirus.cai.com and get the free-for-life updates.

One note: Computer Associates (cai.com) has taken an earnings beating over the last couple of years, so "free-for-life" might turn out to be their life...heheh.

Here's the blurb about continuing to get updates free if installed:

Although the InoculateIT Personal Edition program will end on June 7, 2001, we will continue to make antivirus signature updates available to you for as long as you have InoculateIT Personal Edition installed on your computer.

Yeah it was a great program, and a great anti virus program.

I have it installed right now running in the background.
Too bad they couldn't continue, they must be losing money.

Slikkster -- Thanks for the heads up. Of course, I got the same notice. They are also offering registered users a decent discount on their new AV programs. Not very expensive, but not free.

Forgive me for stealing your thunder, but after I saw this, I posted
the same info in General Hardware and Off Topic. I think it's important enough that the rest of AT should know about this.

Anyone who wants it should download it and register it immediately. No jive, no put on. Just great anti-virus software at a truly unbeatable price.

No one said you have to switch. They said they would keep providing definitions as long as you have the program on your pc, so just go on using it.

While CA is not THAT big, they are huge. But the size of the company has nothing to do whether they make profits or not. CA has had some problems lately for sure. Both stockholders and ex-employees have made some serious allegations as well.

this is gay, you can install innoculatIT because you have another antivirus program already install.

you need to uninstall your AV program inorder to install innoculateIT.

I just stick with nortan av corperate ed

I have been running the innoc for a couple of months and it is the best av program I have run across. It is not a system hog, easy to set up and I have not had one crash due to it. It works on lesser type computers well also ie p100 - p200 range. I have had nothing but problems related to Norton and mcafee (Will lock up and slow ya down). Besides you cannot argue the price. Sorry to see ya go Innoc.

BTW, I don't think comparing Computer Associates to IBM and Microsoft is valid. Maybe in $$$/year but in terms of the actual companies Computer Associates tends to just buy software and then package and sell it. Then don't innovate very much. Some people would accuse Microsoft of doing the same thing but at least Microsoft innovates a bit. I don't believe Computer Associates innovates at all. So they are up there on my suck-o-meter as a good place for MBAs and a bad place for programmers, etc...

Hey! Maybe that is a good thing! All the MBAs will go to companies like these and we won't have to deal with them in the real world. (waiting for the Anandtech MBAs to start flaming)

There is one other free virus scan that is supposed ot be better then Inoculate IT. I hate to see it go since I use it, but this might be an option now too. According to a few reviews I read, AVG is supposed to acutally be just a little better then Inoculate at detecing viruses.

I don't think that just downloading it is the important thing to do. It will always be out there somewhere. You need to registure it and get a number to receive updates.

Eh.. i'm sick of being required to register things. It's easy enough to just live with the virus I would get once out of every 20 years.
