I suppose this is hot for people who still use AOL on broadband?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- One of the worst kept secrets in the business world finally became official Wednesday: AOL is now going to offer many of its services for free to broadband customers.

The announcement was made as AOL's parent company, Time Warner, the world's largest media company, reported that it swung to a profit in the latest quarter. (Time Warner also owns CNNMoney.com.)

Time Warner is going to give away many of its AOL services for free. But will that lead to a gain in sales and profits at AOL?
TECHNOLOGY

AOL said the free products would begin to be available in September. The company also said that people who've left AOL during the past two years will also be able to get their old e-mail addresses back for free.

Finally, AOL, contrary to some market rumors, also said that it's decided to continue offering dial-up access (for a monthly fee) to existing dial-up subscribers.

yes yes yes, AOL sucks, doodoo dada.

I find it's great for the parents or grandparents who are still on AOL, but are on broadband. That's one less monthly fee to pay now.

Haha... yeah, a friend of mine switched to broadband and was still paying an extra $10/month for AOL. I seriously told him to get a grip on reality and cancel that waste of space. There are other portals out there if you need them.

I've try'd to explain that SO many times to [gf's family] and they just look at you with this dumb puzzled look like 'what'. It's like they dont even realize there is a I.E. browser, much less F.Fox or Opera (that is beyond comprension).
It's like they LIKE all that cheesy spam mail, send this to 10 ppl letters and all those viruses that they get at least every other month (it seems).

its a good deal regardless, b/c my mom would never get rid of it.

So, how do existing customers switch? The OP's link seems to be a sign-up for "new" customers.

My father still uses AOL for e-mail, and is paying $15/month for their Broadband access option. It'd be nice to get him switched off and save that $15/month.

I found out that if you sign on AOL, go to keyword "Change Plan", and it does it right there. Just click on free button.

Call their 1-800 number and speak with a knowledgable CSR.

I've thought about this and it would probably require AOL paying me $50 a month before I would install their software on my main PC.
