sears is a stupid store. i admit i got a little excited, but usually when it seems too good to be true, it is.

I used to work for Sears, those things are rigged. There's no way you'll find a better deal, if you did, it's because you found an employee who obviously didn't do his/her homework. He/she and their manager will hear about it. Trust me.

sears sucks. They have their return policy stated at each register, and I tried to return an item within 30 days, and they WOULD not accept it back. I had to talk the STORE manager to finally get them to take it back.

I ventured to my local Sears today to gather some more data on this opportunity.

Kenmore Challenge Checklist

I found a GE Washer at Lowe's for $397 ($2.88 less than the Kenmore) which matched up almost exactly, feature for feature. Model # WLSE4210AWW

There are two close approximations on the GE website. Look at model #'s WPSE4200AWW & WCSE4230AWW both @ $429.00 MSRP.

GE Washers

The discrepencies between the Kenmore 20702/20712 and the GE WLSE4210 follow:

1) The Kenmore "Dual Action (R) Plus Agitator with 2-piece design VS the GE 1-piece agitator

2) The Kenmore Quiet Pak (TM) sound insulation VS the GE "Quiet By Design" philosophy

3) The Kenmore Motor (see checklist for specs) VS the GE Motor

From the physical looks of the two, I wouldn't doubt that GE made the Kenmore model.

I'm nervous going into this "creative purchase" (sounds better than scam) because $400 is a hefty wager. Even if we did find an exact match somewhere, what's to keep Sears from sending you a letter in 10 weeks that refutes your challenge siting differences between Kenmore's "usable capacity" and GE's 3.2 cubic foot "capacity".

Also, per the previous posts, how do you purchase the washer and then return it 10 weeks later if your challenge isn't approved. I'm assuming you never pick it up from the warehouse, but 10 weeks is far beyond 30 days.

I went to Sears today and got the checklist for the Kenmore washer model 20922 for $479.88. Then I went to Lowe's and one of the salesman had worked at Sears. He told me that one of the items on the checklist, the Triple action agitator, was a feature exclusively made on the Kenmore models by Whirlpool and not on their other models. This is probably the same thing you'll find on the 20902 with the double agitator. Sounds like Sears rigged the challenge...But I'll still check around, a free washer is too good of a deal to pass up. Also, from the wording on the checklist, I don't think you need to buy the washer from another store also. Just buy it from Sears and then fill out the Challenge form.
FYI, this challenge is good through April 14, 2001.

...of course sears rigged the challenge. If they didn't, this deal would snowball like you wouldn't believe. C'mon, if you got a $400 washer FREE from sears, the first thing you'd do (even before the internet) would be to tell all your friends. They'd all go do it - and then tell their friends. Within a week sears would give away 834,034 washers.

My guess is that you guys will never find a deal they'll match, unless sears really screws up doing their homework. Any items that qualify will have some "exclusive" feature that distinguishes their model from others. If sears sold the 10 speed CD-R with "write proof" and you found a 12 speed CD-R with "burn proof" instead, they'd try to claim that their "write proof" technology was better and thus no money back for you. Sears can afford to have appliances "custom made" with special features because they'll order so many from the manufacturer. And then they can have their salesmen push it on you as an 'extra' that only sears has.

Someone, PLEASE prove me wrong! I'd like a free washer too. hehehe. But I'm not holding my breath.

I did a search for this dual action agitator. Stuff comes up!! They want me to buy a replacement dual action agitator, from a GE parts site. This gave me hope, so I went to the GE site. I looked up the specs for every washer they sell. No dual action agitator. They only have the flexcare and the Gentle Power agitator. Looks like sears has done one over on us. Change the name of the part, and avoid a challenge being beat. What Jerks.

I used to work at a retailer (Silo) that competed with Sears (until they went out of business). I'd like to clarify a few points that I learned from my 6 years there.

1. Prices are often set "in-store" by managers to compete with local specials/retailers. Not all prices are nationally set.

2. Sears doesn't manufacture anything. ALL Kenmore models are made by another major manufacturer, to Sears specifications. Often, Kenmore models offer Sears-specific features, so that price comparing is nearly impossible for the consumer. Whirlpool has been manufacturing Kenmore washers and dryers for as long as I can remember. Whirlpool reps. used to tell us that Sears had the Kenmore models made to lower specifications on many components that the consumer will never see, like the control panels not having sealed connectors, etc. Pretty sneaky stuff if you asked me. Anyway, a common Sears selling strategy is to tell the customer that Kenmore is the most popular brand in America, which may be true. But the reason they sell so many is that the give ANYONE there credit card. So they make it very easy to buy their stuff.

So, there you go. I hope this helps a little. I agree with the above posts that the whole thing is rigged. Bad ju-ju if you asked me.

The more I think about it, the more rediculous I feel thinking that I would be able to get Sears to give me a free washing machine. I guess I've been spoiled by Staples, OD, CC, CrudUSA, etc. But it is pretty slimy of them to make such a misleading claim.

Looks like Sears is having one more of this challenge
starting this week. It includes a water heater.
Spec411, can you let us know if this was the one
that you challenged (i would guess not, if sears learnt
their lesson). But pointers to matching and the brand/store
where you found the comparable product might help.
