desperate for attention... trying to take advantage of the name built by the Sopranos
The phrase AFAIK originated in the first Godfather movie. James Caan, playing the character of Santino "Sonny" Corleone, is talking to Al Pacino, playing the character of Michael Corleone. The scene is taking place in the time immediately following the attempt on Don Vito's life, by Virgil Sollozzo's crew.
Michael Corleone states that the only way for 'Pop' to be safe is for Sollozzo (and his bodyguard police capitan) to be killed and that he (Michael) would be willing to execute him. "Sonny" in tongue-in-cheek manner, replies:
What are you gonna do? Nice college boy, hah? Didn't want to get mixed up in the family business. Now you wanna gun down a police captain? Why, because he slapped ya in the face a little bit? Hah? What do you think this is, the Army, where you shoot 'em a mile away? You gotta get up close like this and, bada-bing!, you blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit... C'mere."
Thus, the phrase does not originate with the Sopranos.
