Relax, everyone. Dr. Laura is usually found on AM radio. Most popular AM radio hosts (Dr. Laura, Rush, the guy who imitates bizarre callers and then answers them himself) are just playing a role, a character. If they act rational, or middle-of-the-road moderate, they don't get people riled up, and they don't get listeners. That translates to low ratings. This is all about money, it's not about right or left wing politics. Do yourself a favor, tune out the crap on AM radio.

Healey, I agree with you about 90%. I don't understand the comment "the money behind the media may be right wing, but their oversight is primarily bottom line". Maybe I'm naive, but with almost all media being liberal (with an agenda, in my humble opinion), I have a hard time believing "the money behind the media may be right wing". Wolfgang's comment that "she was successfully browbeaten by the left into toning down her comments" is also hard to believe. Sure, she wants to make money. Don't we all. I listen to her alot. I think she is the last person on the planet to compromise her position to further her career. Yes, she pisses me off quite a bit with her rudeness, but it's hard to say she is flat out wrong (assuming you have a conscience). Maybe she apoligized for a comment on gays, but I don't think that's because "she was successfully browbeaten by the left into toning down her comments".

My problem with Dr. Laura isn't her views (although I disagree with them), her hypocritical comments, or her morals.
What I object to is her audacity to propose that if someone doesn't live by her ideals, that makes them an immoral person. It's just another case of someone trying to force their values onto others. Just because someone has an overinflated sense of what they consider to be right and wrong doesn't actually make those things right and wrong for the rest of the world. I think she proved that with her comments about homosexuals.

It's amazing how much hate & name calling comes from the so called "Tolerant" left when someone disagrees with them.

This should make a good gag gift for my mother-in-law, who actually buys into Dr. L's BS.

Hehehe, I'm not particularly Catholic, though I was rasied one.

Here in San Francisco, its really funny watching all the PC Liberals totally trash her for her 'opinions'.

Its ok to have NAMBLA meet at the SF Library.

Its ok to have the 'Sisters Of Mercy' publicly ridicule nuns in the various Gay Pride parades, while several small nun's orders work in small side street hospices help many AIDS patients die...

Its ok for grade schools to teach kids that you 'must' accept gays and their SO's where ever you go, at any event, or you are evil.

Now, I have several friends who aer gay. several co-workers who are gay. They are 'out', but most of them think this is to much.

Its one thing to hate, and quite another to have a different view.

The liberals have become the Nazi's, down to the same strategies, and thought-police tactics.

The money behind the media is fiscally conservative -- one doesn't generate wealth in America unless one understands and succeeds within a free marketplace, after all -- but it's also socially and politically liberal, fiscal conservatism aside, and by and large. (Rupert Murdoch is an exception, though even he's more not particularly morally conservative. I mean, look at Fox Entertainment -- not exactly Moral Majority fare.)

"Stupid whore," "c*nt," "hypocrit" {sic}, etc.

It amazes me that when someone disagrees with the opinions of such a "hate pusher," they must resort to 6th-grade name-calling. Better yet, try to get Congress (or some other variant of government) to silence them! That's the way to be tolerant, loving, and compassionate. At least with Dr. Laura, one pretty well knows where she stands on issues. This sort of straight talk isn't always espoused by her opponents.

Yes, she is Dr. Laura. Her degree is a PhD in Physiology. In a year or so, I will have my DMA (Voice Performance and Pedagogy). Do you think I will not want to be addressed as "Dr.?" As for her credentials, if I remember correctly, she is a licensed family and marriage counselor. She also freely admits that she has made errors of judgment in her past and her lifestyle. That doesn't make her current opinions or lifestyle any less valid. Even if one has played with matches in the past, it's still okay to teach children not to do so.

If you disagree with her viewpoints, counter them with cogent viewpoints of your own. By the way, "She sucks!" doesn't quite qualify. If you don't like her style, say why, and try to persuade others, if you so desire. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy listening to someone who calls 'em like she sees 'em. Sometimes plain talk goes a long way. Remember, many of our own mothers tried to teach us things in a very blunt manner.

If you don't like her, don't get her book. If you do like her, get the book.

No reason for hate mongering here, IMHO.

badpacket -

At the risk of being flamed by the thought police, I totally agree with your post. Political correctness was just the first step in this battle for our minds. By governing language, you can effectively govern thought.

Think about it, every word you utter publicly must be tempered to make sure that you don't inadvertently offend someone through the omission of a hyphenated phrase (i.e. African-American, not black). I have recently been chastized for that little "mistake" at the law school that I attend by a liberal, white faculty member.

What about the school in Colorado that expelled a girl for wearing a "Straight Pride" shirt, while condoning - even encouraging "Gay Pride" shirts? Personally, I think any of those "Pride" shirts are in poor taste. I care not what one does in his home with his or her equipment, and I don't understand the need to publicize it. But if you allow one expression, you most certainly should allow the other.

My 2 centavos...

My problem with "Dr." Laura is that she holds herself out to be some sort of therapist and uses her position of prominence to give people bad advice. She is arrogant, self-righteous and freely indulges her sadistic streak on the unfortunate people who call in. She exploits the callers for her own benefit. This would be considered inappropriate and non-therapeutic in a real therapist.

The fact that these people voluntarily subject themselves to her abuse is just evidence that they need qualified advice. I have no doubt that she does real damage to people who have real problems.

I have often wondered why the hell anyone would call the Dr. Laura show - or subject themselves to public humiliation.

I prefer private humiliation, personally.

Good question!

She treats people harsher than your round the corner shrink.
Anyone can see her wanton past in a second.
She didn't go to place where they spawn shrinks.
Is there anymore expletive that people haven't tried to stick to her?

But many people call her for advice. And even so MANY MORE listen to her radio show. Why don't more people listen to a real shrink's radio show?

What's wrong with these people? Since her advice is not about trivial matter,
they must find real values in her opinions. If one has a problem, which one would you rather be: the one with good advice but bruised ego, or one with no advice but with an intact ego?

My assesment - Dr Laura - Not worth my time

I used to listen to her when i worked the most mid numbingly boring job in the world at HP. She kept me mad and awake.

Everyone seems so proud when someone takes a stand on morals, they don't take the time to investigate or care what they are

<< Defiant1: she's self-righteous??

At least she doesn't try to censor her opponents, nor does she ridicule them with even a fraction of the ferocity with which they attack her, generally with the same degree of, well, vicious self-righteousness that you display.

She's an outspoken moral conservative in a leftish media world (Democrat by about 10 or 20:1) -- so her opponents, typically, don't refute her or even engage her arguments, they simply libel and try to silence her. Easy for them to do in Hollywood.

You can always tell the people who wake up on the right side of hitler in the mornings... 'liberal media, liberal media liberal media.' can we say BS? I can. who do you think has all the money in the US? generally the media moguls are right leaning (right falling?) conservative screw the public jerkoffs. There is NO liberal 'bias' in the media.

<<
Or in academia -- it's the same approach they take on campus: We're loving and tolerant, which means those who disagree with us -- obviously hateful and intolerant, or they'd agree with us, right? -- should be silenced. (Especially if they use white male, linear, logical thinking -- that's downright phallocentric!!!) So let's set up speech and hiring codes to make absolutely sure that a student left turn is mandatory, now and (via faculty hiring control) forever to come.

After all, isn't intimidating and silencing opponents what tolerance is all about? Conservative ideas are simply too dangerous, too threatening to important leftist ideals -- for the sake of freedom of thought, collective social progress, and most of all, tolerance, they must be silenced!
>>

Gee it is funny how the CONSERVATIVES are the ones who want to destroy free speech. dont want any naked people, dont want people to say what they want, cant have the internet (for example) unregulated!!! people might be able to express themselves this way! The HORRORS! dont forget it was those conservative fascists who sponsored the CDA, COPPA, CIPA, and other 'free thought' restricting acts.

<<
Amen, and amen. Now, let's all hug and sing a song, shall we?

Sure, why not. something fun tho please.

Let me hit those last points one by one.

1) The media is, has, and likely will always be liberally biased. Journalists are educated in universities by liberal faculty members. The lessons and mentoring in college will affect their outlook on the world for the rest of their lives.

Assuming arguendo that Rupert Murdock (Grand Poopah of Fox) is the biggest goose-stepping fascist in the world, he has little effect over the news product as a whole. The media is made up of many, many people, each with their own agendas, just like you do. One can not hide his agendas in speech all the time. Ultimately, their subconscious betrays them, and they will the report the news, colored by their own opinions. They are only human, and these media outlets are not corporate police states.

With the advent of 24hr news channels, we've seen a lot of filler programming. Fox, CNN, and PMSNBC are constantly pumping out show after show ddicated to giveing certains spins and news from "a different point of view." What the hell does that mean? Simply it means that they are paying someone with a nice haircut to espouse their opinions to put a little spin on the news that day - and this sells...

There is not enough news, so anchors are free to conduct their own shows with their agenda in plain view. To argue that the media is not liberally biased is absurd...

News today has become far more opinion-based than in the halcyon days of Walter Cronkite, who would bore the ever-living crap out of you with the days events... no fanfare, no opinion... just the news.

Both Sides with Jesse Jackson is a prime example of a biased media product. Jackson will select some lackey form the ACLU or some other organization from the left and will select a "victim" from the right. In theory, both sides are represented, however when the show begins, the Rev. Jackson and his lackey will jump all over the scapegoat from the right, who won't be able to get a word in edgewise all night.

Dan Rather is a prime example of a biased journalist. Sam Donaldson is another (especially with his famous "Come on Mr. President line that he continually hammered Reagan with - which did become the title of his autobiography incidentally). These people are personalities, and they are paid for being personalities - not news people per se. A trained monkey can read the news. The suits, who are likely conservative, know that this kind of crap sells... people watch the hell out of this stuff, and even though it doesn't really jive with their political beliefs, greenbacks trump principles every day. The corporations are happy with the product as it is...

2) Gee it is funny how the CONSERVATIVES are the ones who want to destroy free speech. dont want any naked people, dont want people to say what they want, cant have the internet (for example) unregulated!!! people might be able to express themselves this way! The HORRORS! dont forget it was those conservative fascists who sponsored the CDA, COPPA, CIPA, and other 'free thought' restricting acts.

Do you have the voting records on these issues? I bet you'll find a few freedom-loving liberals who voted for these things.

Keep in mind that Senator Liebermann led the attack on all of the web pron and game violence that we hold so dear. Let us not forget that it was Tipper (Here Boy! Fetch!) Gore that gave us all the stoopid labels on CD's that made kids want them more. Let's not forget Let us not forget that it was a democratically controlled Congress that delivered the Internet Decency Act... Keep in mind that it was Al Gore that brought you the V-chip so that you could spend an additional $20 per new TV set for another feature that you won't use to save your children from naked boobies.

There are conservative fascists out there. They are enemies of freedom. There are enemies of freedom who come dressed as liberals... be not deceived, and vote wisely, not blindly.

Thank you for your time.
