I have used the 'free' carfax report whwen it was posted last and it was wrong. VERY WRONG. Is this a full report? Can anyone confirm it? If someone has a payed for account and would like to run my info please PM me or email me at stompah@hotmail.com for my vin so you can verify this.

screen of part of my car's report

Thats my car. Note where I have left part of teh VIN #. That depicts that the car is a police package with a 351w. The car despite what CF.com says was a police car AND a taxi. And they failed to list the mileage when I registered the car in 2000.

So can someone help me figure out if this is a full & proper report or is CF.com VERY wrong.

Stompah, the information contained in Carfax reports is neither exhaustive nor consistent.

That's why they use purposefully vague terminology such as "No Taxi Registration Reported", instead of "This vehicle has never been used as a taxi". It would be nearly impossible to collect the necessary data to provide a really reliable and useful report for every post-1981 U.S. automobile. And even if it were possible, it wouldn't be reasonable to expect such a report to contain data from other countries, for example, that a vehicle has served as a police cruiser in Canada or a taxi in Mexico prior to importation into the U.S.

Carfax relies upon systems such as Motor Vehicle Departments and Inspection programs all over the country to collect their data, and then to provide it to them in a cost-effective, timely manner. These entities, some run by the government, some under contract to private firms, sometimes just a chain of licensed repair shops, vary greatly in the quantity and quality of data that they provide.

Even when the system works well, there can be other factors which influence how much accurate information will be reflected in the report. The Connecticut Vehicle Inspection Program, normally a solid supplier of mileage numbers and inspection dates (very useful when looking for odometer fraud) was shut down early in 2002. It will be starting up again in a completely different form, but even if they immediately begin providing useful data, there will always be a gap of nearly 18 months in this particular bank of information.

Of course, we haven't discussed vehicles that aren't registered at all in the traditional sense. In many jurisdictions, Police, Fire Department, and other government-owned vehicles are not formally registered with their State's department of motor vehicles. Also, cars owned by auto dealers, repairers, transporters, and other similar enterprises are often "registered" by means of an interchangeable license plate, and no public record may exist anywhere of their use or transfer. It isn't reasonable to expect Carfax to have up-to-date information on such a vehicle.

It's best to think of a Carfax report as a tool, not a complete solution. Personally, I find that a quick chat with the last registered owner can be an excellent source of information. But sometimes, a carfax report is the only game in town. At least it is quick and easy, requiring only a VIN check. But it isn't perfect...that's why the much-touted "Carfax $5000 Guarantee" only pays you 10% of the car's value, not the full amount you paid for the car, if fraud is discovered.

I agree 100% with what you said. I was actually disappointed that my car's history did not show up in a carfax report properly. I was lucky enough to have a fellow forum member at overclockers.com have a month of unlimited reports and he ran mine. The same result. So basically my worry that this free report was not 100% in depth was unfounded just to be replaced with the worry that its not as in depth as it appears to be.

Carfax has fallen short a few times with my car. First the failure to recognize that my VIN has a police code in it. You are correct that not every municipality will have the car registered officially. But I failed to see any line which said that this car may have been used as a police vehicle due to its VIN. Then the Failure to see that the car was registered as a taxi. A few accidents as a taxi (nothing major but insurance companies did pay out for it). And finally MY registration of the car.

May I ask you if you have run tests on your car? How accurate were they? Were the car(s) passed thru multiple hands? Did Carfax report it?

And a final note a peice of paper or a few pixels on my monitor mean nothing. What matters is what my eyes, ears and hands feel. I have thoroughly checked out every car I have or have not purchased after having a brake issue with my first car. I learned the hard way

Stompah, I have run Carfax on all of my vehicles for a few years and I have found the following to be true;

1. They have reported date and mileage of ownership transfer and new registration with very good reliability, say 75% of the time or better.

2. They have reported date and mileage of emissions testing somewhat less frequently, perhaps 50% of the time.

3. They have reported both commercial and lease registrations faithfully, at least in those cases where I knew that the vehicles had such a history.

4. I have never seen a report of title problems, collision or other damage, insurance claims, et cetera, even when I knew that the vehicle had been heavily damaged and insurance claims filed.

One report, on a 1995 Taurus I used to own, made interesting reading and could have saved the prior owner a lot of money and aggravation. It had originally been registered as a rental vehicle, then an unscrupulous Ford dealer sold it to the next owner as a "clean one-owner local trade". The poor lady spent a fortune repairing it so that I got a great car with many new parts, but I bet she would have walked away if she knew it had been a rental.

If you think that Carfax should warn you of possible police service based on a production code, you ought to write to them and urge them to do so. Personally, I'm not sure how I would feel about that; it's sort of like warning folks who order a report on a Hummer H2; "Exercise caution...remember, you are buying this vehicle from someone stupid enough to pay over $50,000 for a Chevy Suburban with square fenders".

Your mileage may vary.

This is still working, you just have to dig a little deeper. If you go to the Toyota Dealership shown, you can find the link for the free Carfax report. Look for a menu item from the Pre-Owned webpage, called "Lemon Check". Hope that helps!

No even that link wants you to pay $24.95 for the report after it gives ou a teaser on how many hits in the database the VIN gives you.. This is dead...
