The rebate on the drive is a Staples rebate, not from Digital Research.

I didn't find any rebate information at Staples. The last times I went for one of these Staples rebates, the rebate was clearly linked with the item.

I found the rebate in the rebate section under Digital Research. The rebate is specific to Staples, not Digital Research. I needed a drive, and after cost this will cost me just tax, but these bigger rebates make me nervous. (Yes, $40 is a big rebate to me.)

I just read at another website that this rebate requires IN store purchase. I assume this means Internet sales will not work. I just read the rebate form and it says "purchased at Staples stores only." This can be viewed two ways. One, the coupon is only good for drives purchased at Staples. Or Two, it only applies to in-store (BM) purchases. My hunch is that the wording of this rebate is standard stuff which means this rebate only applies to stuff purchased at Staples, Internet or otherwise.

The nice thing about Staples is that they send you a regular cash register receipt, along with the Internet receipt. So they might not know any better where it was purchased.

Maybe I'm droning on because I am trying to convince myself my frigging $40 will show up someday.

I am one of the few who ever got a Digital Research rebate and it was an adventure. The hardest I ever received. Staples rebates have been working fine although they do take about 12 weeks to show at your door. Lark

I actually got three rebates from Digital Research right before they went under. This rebate is from STAPLES, though, and is definitely designed for online purchases(submit it electronically).

This is the first time I heard that Staples includes regular cash register receipts with online orders. I've received several Staples online orders and I've never received one.

Never get a cash register receipt from Staples.com Nor a receipt, period. The only thing I got is the packing slip which I use for the rebate.

I am comfortable with rebates that come from Staples and are advertised. Keep copies of everything. As long as Staples doesn't go out of business in the next 4 months you should be okay. Just keep that number to the Office of the President of Staples handy. I have it on my speed dial. (Just kidding)

I was in Circuit City and someone came in with a complaint that he didn't get his rebate. The store gave him the price adjustment.

I purchased a Digital Research CD Drive (44x) about a year and a half ago from CompUSA. Here are my thoughts:

-I never recieved my rebate
-My drive shakes my case like an earthquake is going on
-I have hit the eject button and seen the disc spinning fast as the tray came out
-It makes a clicking noise sometimes while the disc is spinning
-I was playing a game about a month ago and it made the click sound then my game froze and my machine froze. I had to reboot.

What do I think about this rebate. Well first of all unless you get the rebate (your counting on this) its not that great of a price. Even if you get the rebate the drive sucks. That is why they went out of business! I thought about getting a new 50x drive but if I do it wont be from them...unless I want even more vibrations and problems. There are always deals on 50x drives from other manufactures so it's not like I am missing anything.

But that's just my opinion...I could be wrong =)

Try http://www.dr-tech.com. From their web page, it does not say they are out of business. However, their top-of-line CDROM is 50X (marked as new product).

Stockjock...My initial post was rather cryptic and not very helpful to newbies. Experienced Staples deal hunters will know how to do this deal.

I apologize for not being more descriptive but Anandtech has these stringent rules about what can be posted on this site.

So let me be clear.

The coupon is a staples coupon..you have to go to another site to get the codes. I am sure I am not allowed to mention any sites or my post will be edited and I might be *gasp* banned. Sign up for a Staples account and you will probably get codes in your email. I get them in my email and from snail mail. However, I am a dividends customer so maybe I get more codes than some. They are not unique codes although Staples claims they are going to that kind of system.

The rebate is a Staples rebate. You send it to a Staples address.
I have no idea of the quality of this drive or even if the company is still in business. However, free is free and some people could use it.

P.S. There is also a free 14.99 Kodak Funsaver 35 Camera that you could add if your total is 60..so you have to add something cheap..uhhh but I guess I can't give that code either so just search around ;-)
