I think Eset Nod32 is better. The smallest footprint out of any AV engine.... that I know of anyhow.

I picked up 3 copies of Panda Titanium AV a few months back for $24 shipped total, so it'll be interesting to see how this compares to that version. Thanks for the link, OP !!

I tried a demo of the latest version from Panda 3 weeks ago. I liked everything except inside an application such as DIscJuggler, browsing your HD files took forever, I could only conclude Panda was slwoing it down and validating the application was not doing something mischevious.

I use to be a huge Panda fan but it only works well if you have tons of system resources to burn. Eset Nod32 is the only AV I found that works well with any machine, even an old win98 box that some of my older clients refuse to upgrade. Although I have not tried Kapersky or Clamwin I can now not claim Eset Nod32 is the very best. But I did have a great article about AV software somewhere in general and even the very best engines only catch about 85+% of wild virus and malicious code. So bottom line, just because you have an AV software it doesn't give you the license to check in common sense at the door. Nothing in the world is free, so are all those "free mp3s and Xvids and especially APPS!" really worth a fresh install every 3 months? Maybe for you but not your less technically inclined friends. You get what you pay for.

Claimwin is free and after I tested all the major scanners over a two week period, clamwin was the last one to be tested and it managed to pick up the stuff ALL the commercial scanners managed to pass up. ALL the commercial scanners said I was virus free but opensource clamwin proved them wrong.

The only downside to clamwin is that it is still a beta project and does not offer real time monitoring of your system. But give it some time and the project managers say that it will be a feature of future releases.

Of the commercial scanners Kaspersky is currently the only one whose scanner can accuratly detect the most viri and it's firewall manages to out perform every other firewall including Kerio.

My favorite is the customer who comes in with a machine riddled with infection from Kazza, Morpheus, Bear Share, etc. and when I say it's infected beyond repair they always look at me with a straight face and say the same thing

"But I have my Nortons on there?!?! You must be lying."

When I explain to them the copy of Norton they bought in 2001 and haven't updated since is useless, and further explain that with the best, most up to date anti virus apps possible put on the machine it's still no gaurentee of no infection. Lastly I always tell my customer that if the machine leaves repaired and protected and they d/l "free music and movies" they WILL get infected, gaurenteed no matter what. That keeps em from coming back 6 month later and saying it's my fault the pc is infected again, which, as hard as it is to believe, they will do.
