Thanks for the reminder.

Some states already had laws allowing periodic free credit reports to residents of those states, but this site finally empowers residents of all those other states who have to rely on the recent federal law. It's about time.

I suggest you use the 1-877 number, vs. the website. The website directs you to each of the three bureaus, and then you have to answer any number of questions about credit cards, mortgages, etc., to prove your identity.

The 1-877 number only asks some basic identity questions; SSN, address, name, phone, etc. Then, after some prompts, you get a message that the report(s) will be mailed within 10-15 days, or some such.

The website offers extras, like credit scores, but you have to pay for those. I just found the automated phone to be much quicker and less painful.

Of course, keep basic security considerations in mind if using the phone. Use a landline phone vs. cordless or cell.

For the previous posts.... checking your own report never effects it. It is only hard inquires that lower it for a short period.... and thoose are from applying for things etc...

When creditors check your credit score, it indicates you are seeking additional credit -- and therefore a slightly greater risk overall (lower score).

I found credit cards on my account that were opened before I was born. All 3 list my address, name, SS as correct, as well as past addresses, yet they do not have my current CCs. Instead they have 3 accounts opened in the early 80s and some newer bank cards I dont have. Also, it says no collections on me, but I know for a fact I have a medical collection out on me. wtf?

I have and it's still the same for me. I even went thru http://www.ftc.gov to the link and still the same message for me.

"The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable."

I tried it on Firefox and IE and no luck. Could it be that I am stationed in Germany? I don't think that would matter though would it?
