No, that's not necessarily the case. Re-read the original post detailing reasons ALL US RESIDENTS may qualify for free credit reports.

IMO, reason #3 should be a fairly easy one to qualify for. If you believe there's inaccurate information on your credit report(s), you're supposed to be entitled to a free copy of your credit reports to verify and correct such information.

To the best of my knowledge, the bureaus DO NOT REPORT OR TRACK what credit, employment, etc. you were DENIED. They simply track what credit you've been issued and how you've handled that credit. Thus, reason #4 should be an easy one to qualify for as well so long as your Credit Report has been looked at by a bank, employer, etc. within the past 60 days (that's how much time you get to request your credit report when you've been denied credit). Of course going this route will limit you to free credit reports of only those bureaus whose reports were looked at.

P.S. Only one of the 3 bureaus offers a free CREDIT SCORE (TransUnion IIRC. It's listed in the original post as well).

Great! I live in GA

Anyone else suspect freecreditreport.com of using that as a ruse to keep a copy of your credit report in order to ultimately become another credit reporting agency themselves? Why else would they do it for free? Big brother at its WORST.

You can also get a free credit score(one time) at www.eloan.com. I think they use the Transunion report to calculate it...AND I checked that it doesn't show up on your report as an enquiry. It just shows up as a personal credit check.
Thats what I did a few months back.
The score from your Transunion report will probably be different...as there are different ways to calculate your score...atleast 3 that I know of. And each of them gives slightly different scores. My Transunion score and my eloan score were different by about 70 points....but a friend of mine had the same difference....so I bet you can attribute it to 'strict marking' by Transunion
Hope this helps.

Bump up for excellent posting - requested mine today. Thanks!

Edit: Transunion required me to send in something by mail, so I guess I won't be getting that score.

I ordered free reports from Equifax and Transunion as I live in MD, It was pretty straightforward.

For Experian, the 800 number listed does not give any option for picking the free report for residents of qualifying states, they just have the option saying do you want to purchase the report? and then give you options to pay by check or CC.

Has anyone been able to get a free copy from Experian using the 866 number?

I just got my report number from experian and went right online to view the report immediately. No billing information provided. I chose the option in the phone queue indicating that I had been denied credit for some reason. Experian appeared to be the easiest for me, but that just may be because I was able to go right online and see my report.

PROPS TO DIGGLER !!!:gift:

I never got to any point where it asked me for any personal information. On all of the automated systems, after I stated I
was unemployed, they went straight to the mailling information.

to send them a request form by mail. There seemed to be no automated
system to retrieve my information. I think the menus may be different
based upon your area code. Can someone perhaps write the steps involved?
The automated systems are self-explanatory. If they all want you to mail in your request, the most likely reason for that is your current mailing address doesn't match what they have on-file in your credit report. Thus, they'll need you to US MAIL your request (at which point they'll probably send a reply letter first verifying that you're in fact who you claim to be) and then send you your credit reports. That's what happened w/ me several years ago when I was working out of state and needed a copy of my credit report sent to me at the address I was temporarily living at.

More than likey you did put in the numeric portion of your mailing address. I answered that I was unemployed/denied employment and it asked me for SSN and numeric portion of address.

How do I unfreeze the account - a 90 day security alert has been added to my account because trying to get a free credit report via Experian. I do not want any fraud/security alert on my accounts at this time as I am looking for loans- I wish I did not follow the instructions in this thread. It is just safer to pay and get the scores.

Thanks!

I tried Equifax and Experian and both said that no inquiries have been made on my credit in the past 60 days, which is what I was concerned about. Thusly, it wouldn't even let me get a free report, even though I believe I qualify under reason #3: If you have reason to believe your file contains inaccurate information due to fraud.

I was concerned that a car dealer pulled up my credit report without permission two weeks ago, so that's why I'm requesting a report to check on that. Do you know if they had pulled it up it would have counted as a "60 day credit inquiry?"

Thanks!

It sounds like the car dealer either didn't pull up a report or pulled up a TransUnion report (the one bureau you didn't check).

Can you provide a bit more detail on what you did at Transunion's web-site? It would be extremely helpful if you provide a URL to the page on their site which lets you obtain the aformentioned free credit report. Thanks.
