Not to thread crap (that's a paralipsis if I ever heard one...), but I'm not really interested in downloading their "Internet installer" -- There's really no telling what the app might do with your modem while you're sleeping...

While they clearly state at FREE dialup ISP:

NPT's "free" internet access may eventually translate to a limited use or pay service however no specific timeline has yet to be suggested.

Also, they do not provide email or other typical services, expecting that people will use other available freebie services such as Yahoo or Hotmail.

All that said, it is free, for the moment.

Worked for me.
Windows reported the link was established at 52 Kb.

So, if there is a local access number available to you - all set.

FWIW, I don't see how this can truly work, financially, for them. Consider if every bloomin' current paying dialup user in their service area switched to them. They may be able to offer this as an initial tease / loss leader, but wide spread adoption would have to mean going to a fee based system. Don't ya' think? Or truly terrible / always busy service?

edit: I have caller ID "line blocking" enabled, so calling a non-800 type number isn't supposed to reveal my phone number. Clever idea though, providing an "inexpensive" freebie to finagle a way past the "ongoing business relationship", if this is intended to provide available phone numbers for telemarketing. *67 is the code for "selectively" blocking your caller ID manually (on a per call basis, rather than my setup of all calls), AFAIK.

I have tried this a few months back while I was renewing my DSL contract. You have to redial at least 10X to get connected.

I'm logged on with it right now. 49.2kbps and it took only one time to download it. Now I can get off of my mother-in-law's AOL account.. good thing too since Anandtech has all AOL users banned from posting on the forums. Thanks for find!!

Stop me of this is a stupid question, but is it possible to use your cellphone to dial these numbers instead of a landline (as in use minutes on the cell phone instead of a data plan or landline)?

I manually set up the account to try it out. I tried the four local access numbers in my area and each one got through on the first try. Maybe they've got better since you used them. Can't beat it for free as long as it lasts. I know a couple people that can use this. Thanks OP.

Edit: All of my dial connects were 43-46 kbps

Worked for me at work. I'll have to try when I get home. The only problem I see is the fact that there is no email account. Places like this forum that require a non-free email will not work.

In my situation (dial-up only) that might hurt me. Would gmail work in this case?

Many people seem to be bashing, well I think it's a nice backup!!! and if it doesn't work out for some, remember it was listed as just that a backup (and it's free!!!!).

Wow..this is VERY hot! I haven't seen a free dial-up ISP in years. I used various free dial-up services for like 3 years....until they all went out of biz or started charging (netzero). I'm sure they will start charging at some point, but until then this is HOT for anyone with a local number.

FreedomList Free-Cheap ISP Forums The hot deals forum for dialup internet deals. They have a long discussion about this ISP, and lots of good info about other ISPs.

There are <$5 month dial-up services with POP3 mail, no ads, no banners, "unlimited" use, 8 hour cut-off per connection, and newsguy usenet newsgroups.

A long established ISP, Access-4-free, charges a one-time $10 fee, then gives 10 hours per month without charge. I''ve had them as a back up for years.
