According to the link, it was only good through Dec 31st, 2001, and required a 1 year commitment at $31+ a month on programming.

Have at it. I took advantage of the offer about a month ago.
Used the below information. I got the reciever in about 3 days and installed it a week later. The guy never showed up to install it, but I just installed it myself. I complained about the guy not showing and got a month of free Showtime.

Works great. The reciever is a lower end RCA, but capable. It comes with a HU card.

Oh, FYI, I was in Best Buy today and noticed a flyer for a DirecTV reciever w/ TiVo built in, Dish and Installation for 9bux or something like that. Required a full year of service though.

If the F&F is still alive for only 1 month of service you should jump all over this.
Pay 25.00 for shipping, 0.00 for installation, and only 31.00 for 1 month of service=56.00 out of pocket.
Cancel you service after one month, ebay the whole set-up or you might want to keep it as a "test" system.

While you're waiting for your 30 day use of the DTV sytem to expire, go take advantage of the Dish TV system and the I like NINE promo-9 bucks per month(1 yr commitment) for 100 channelshere (ingnore the main post saying "deal dead") you can still get a good system fom Allsat the 4922 system(digital out and UHF remote) for 38.99 shipped.
When the Dish System comes in, take your free installed DTV dish off its post replace it with the Dish System. Ebay the DTV set-up for around 60 bucks-or again you may want to keep a test system around.

Better act quickly on the deal from allsat, for some reason the AT effect takes hold and these companies yank low prices off once a bunch start to get ordered

Next call your cable company(laugh long and loud) and get basic service-local channels only for around 7.00/month, so out of pocket expense for 100+channels should be around 240.00/yr (20 per month) sure beats the hell out of the 720.00/year your paying the cable company.

these things come with HU cards, not H cards right? I don't know jack about this stuff, but I think I just wasted about $100 on some "stuff" that I won't be able to use

No dss systems come with H cards anymore. They stopped making them when they started making HUs which are more secure. Your money was wasted on the "Stuff" that you bought. Unless you go buy an H card, which can be had for about $300. Ouch! Emulation only works with H, not HU (yet)

How did the direct tv installation go? Were you able to get the one month contract? I am asking because I am getting it installed on the 19th.

Well, if this is still going on I'm ready for it but some questions.

1) Do they send you anything to indicate that you are only on the hook for one month?

2) Has anyone cancelled yet without issue after the one month?

3) Can you tell them you don't want installation? I already have a DirecPC dish on the roof with Dual LNB

4) Has anyone gotten the second receiver for $49 more? Should I not?

5) Is there any benefit to getting the Para Todos system? I notice ieee mentions you can ask for the bigger dish. Is that the multi-satellite, dual LNB one?

I canceled my service with DTV on 1-11-02, 30 days to the day after it was installed.
When I got ready to cancel the DTV CSR said is there anytrhing we can do to keep you as a customer-I said let me have it for 9.99 like dish is going to charge me. He said he couldn't go that low but could drop 10/month of the price

I would not say you wasted $100 when you consider a) They sell on ebay for about $150+ and b) you CAN test with HU.

From the little I read the HU cards once "glitched" can be destroyed by an ECM so you really don't want to play that game because you can easily end up with an ice scrapper.

It's my understanding that emulation is really for H cards or do you know something I don't? HU emulation apparently does not exist, only cloning or hacking. Both risk the original and/or cloned card.

FYI, I called the number listed above to order this package. I didn't ask about the commitment at all but the Sales Rep told me there were 2 Options. Option 1 was to commit for 1yr and you'd get free showtime and some other movie channels at the regular rate (which I wasn't paying attention to). Option 2 was for no commitment but I had to activate w/in 30days and pick the total choice ($31.99) package for the first month. After that I could cancel or change at anytime. Seems like the deal is still on to me, package arrives friday or monday.

Further confirmation about this deal still valid.
I just ordered mine. The 2 options I got to choose from was 1-year commitment and "no commitment" which I think means 1 month
shiping and tax adds up to 27 bucks.

It took an hour for the installer to install the system.

He would charge me $79/hour for additional outlet. He mentioned without the second receiver, it is no point to do.

Even I specifically asked for one month contract and the sales person said I can cancel after one month, this guy still put me into a one year contract.

I found out when activating the service. I spent over half hour talking to three or four people to get the thing straight out.

Better call before the installation to reconfirm your one month obligation. Take note of whom you spoke to (,which I didnt).

My question:

Do I need to take the Directv dish for dish network program? Directv dish and Dish Network dish exchangable?
So I only need to have a dish network receiver?

Local Channels $5.99

Total $47.98

What are the other monthly fees and taxes like?
