You don't receive any "good stuff" with the 18x24 dish than with the standard pizza-size one. In fact, it is absolutely pointless to go for the 18x24 -- unless you happen to have HDTV or want DirecTV Para Todos. Otherwise, 99.9% of the programming is coming off 101 W, which either dish receives just fine. 110 W will be in service at some point, and you will need the 18x24 dish for that, but there's little point (right now) unless, as I said, you have HDTV and/or want the Para Todos channels.
The receivers ... there are very few from a couple companies which can handle HDTV. And they are very, very pricey. If you won't be using HTDV, there's no point in dropping $400+ for receivers.
IMHO, RCA is the "best" of the brands out there. Everyone has a different opinion, of course, but my experience with RCA DSS products over the past 4-odd years has been exceptional.
