ieee,
what's the model number for the receiver? I read that you got the HDTV dish, but did you also request the Sat/HD combo receiver? How much extra they charge for the OTA HD decoder combo box?
I'll only sign up if they let me upgrade to the HD/Sat box

Ditto on the Para Todos. I just ordered too. Very curious on the receiver model anyone has gotten. Anyone have the model number?

You don't receive any "good stuff" with the 18x24 dish than with the standard pizza-size one. In fact, it is absolutely pointless to go for the 18x24 -- unless you happen to have HDTV or want DirecTV Para Todos. Otherwise, 99.9% of the programming is coming off 101 W, which either dish receives just fine. 110 W will be in service at some point, and you will need the 18x24 dish for that, but there's little point (right now) unless, as I said, you have HDTV and/or want the Para Todos channels.

The receivers ... there are very few from a couple companies which can handle HDTV. And they are very, very pricey. If you won't be using HTDV, there's no point in dropping $400+ for receivers.

IMHO, RCA is the "best" of the brands out there. Everyone has a different opinion, of course, but my experience with RCA DSS products over the past 4-odd years has been exceptional.

Two day delivery, pretty impressive. I received a Hughes receiver, no serial port and it appears that trees will be blocking my signal. I'll find out more this weekend after I try a few more locations around my house.

Well, I do have a HD Ready Panasonic 56" 16:9 TV, and regular DirecTV so far. Are there any deals on the HDTV/DirecTV receivers yet? Please put that info in this thread!

From the latest DirecTV Freinds and Family Faq:

How much does it cost?
Friends and/or family members will receive a DIRECTV System and standard professional installation at no charge. Shipping and handling will cost the customer $24.95 plus applicable taxes and must be paid via credit card. Participation requires a minimum one-year subscription to TOTAL CHOICE® programming (currently $31.99/mo.) or above. Requesting DIRECTV PARA TODOSTM equipment requires a minimum one-year subscription to OPCIÓN EXTRA ESPECIAL® programming (currently $31.99/mo.) or above.

So I guess they have decided to dump the 1 month plan and go with the standard 1 YEAR requirement.....that BLOWS
Guess I missed another deal for sitting on the fence :disgust:

Call and ask about the one month commitment. I did Monday night and the option was available for one month even though the website did not mention it. I also found out that the Select Choice ($21.99) plan still exists, but is not advertised because all their commitments require the Total Choice plan and of course they would rather you take the Total Choice plan.

IT IS A SCAM. CALLED AND GOT THE EQUIPMENT HOOKED IT UP AND SUBSCIBED AND THEY TOLD ME I HAD AGREED TO A 12 MONTH AGREEMENT AND THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT. CALLED FRIENDS AND FAMILY BACK AND THEY STILL SAY 1 MONTH. DIRECTTV SAYS THERE IS NO SUCH THING IF YOU GET THE RECEIVER FREE.

mattingly --

Print the "letter" out on the first page (obviously) leave out the rest of the stuff around it. Call up your credit card company and tell them you have the letter and dispute it. You might try calling DTV back and tell them that's what you'll be doing. You could also call DTV and tape the conversation pretending you are a new subscriber as evidence.

You didn't order two receivers and pay $49 for the second did you? That was a 1 year commitment. They wanted $99 for no commitment.

I am about to call and activate for the one month committment, if they force the twelve I will be very ill. I have a signal of 95 right now, but I am very worried about an oak tree that may be in my line of site. Twelve month would suck if I spend 8 of them without signal.

*** DON'T DO THIS DEAL IF YOU EXPECT A ONE MONTH COMMITTMENT ***

I called and they act like they never heard of the one month committment deal. After being put on hold three times, the supervisor said that if I had paid for my equipment I would be eligible for the one month deal, but since I received my equipment free I must do the one year committment. Once you activate you are screwed under their terms. If you call to activate, you may want to ask about the committment before telling them you have installed it.

ok, here is what you do if this happens and you get stuck in a one 12 month commitment for some reason:

tell them you are moving, and to put your account on the moving hold.

It was $4 a month, but now i think they changed it to free.

YOu can always try that.

My girlfriend I just found out has been on that moving hold since last May at $5 a month...That seem`s like a waste to me....she still has to pick up where she left off on her 12 month commitment....

But, that moving hold will work for me if I lose signal because of leaves. I can put it on hold until the leaves fall and continue my commitment next winter. Thanks.

WindWalker, why would you sell your system? I'm looking for a DirecTV deal, and I own an HDTV.

After reading all these posts, I am thoroughly confused.

Is there are how-to guide somewhere on how to get the MOST bang for your buck? And yes, I know you know what I mean. But don't forget, I want HDTV programming as well...thanks for your hard work.

You can PM me as well...

I am getting my dish installed tomorrow so I called directtv up to verify
my commitment. I was referred to sales and sales told me the one month
commitment required you to purchase the system for $99. I was told I was
committed for one year. I told the sales rep that wasn't what I was told when I signed up and that I had a letter stating a free system with one
month commitment(copied off page one, thanks to the person who posted it.)
The sales rep put me on hold for a few minutes then came back and said
she could understand my situation and what she would do is update my account to show that if I cancel after one month they will dispute the
cancellation fee. I think I will go ahead with the install. If directtv
ends up not standing by their word I can always dispute it with the credit card co. since I have a letter stating exactly what the terms of
the agreement are.(thanks again)
The number for sales is 888.355.7530

I called twice before I ordered and received the same information. One month commitment. Both times I asked about the SECOND receiver for $49 and was told that requires a one year commitment for that price. If I wanted a one month commitment I would have to pay 99 DOLLARS for the SECOND RECEIVER.

So one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. Jeez what a surprise.:disgust:

If you didn't sign anything agreeing to a 1yr commitment then you don't have a 1yr commitment. The only time you would have signed something is when the installer comes out to activate your system. At that point, read what you are signing and if it says 1yr don't sign it.

I was also told that it was only 1mo required.

EDIT: I received a letter with the terms and conditions and it did mention a 1yr commitment or a $150 cancellation charge (ProRated based on mo's subscribed). It said after installation I could not receive a full refund, but, they would refund prior to installation. So, although I didn't sign anything to agree to that, I didn't feel like fighting with DTV any longer (enough issues with this deal) so I returned the equipment.

says $31.99 / month for Total Choice programming Is this promo now over? When I was in Blockbuster yesterday, saw a promotion for $24.99(month) which pretty much included hardware and installation and 6 months of showtime.
Anyone have any experience with this or can suggest something better?

Thanks
