Ordered one even though I do't have a disposal (septic system).

I'm very curious as to what the active ingredients are. I bet it's some combination of sodium percarbonate (the primary active ingredient in the oxygen cleaner products like Oxyclean). Suspect you could do about as well using a combination of an oxygen cleaner & a grease cutter (like dawn grease liquid detergent) or even a combination of hydrogen peroxide and a grease cutter.

Just be careful what you mix: some combo's (like percarbonate or peroxide & TSP) produce a poisinous gas .

Thanks OP.
I mostly put coffee grounds, egg shells, orange peels, and fruit parts down my disposal. I'm not sure mine ever smells.

I've washed bits of chicken fat down there, and that was a mistake. If I dump a bit of bleach down there before I go to work, the problem is usually gone by the time I get home.

Made the mistake of putting chicken skin in one a few years back. It stuck on the blades for a few weeks before we smelled something quite wrong. My roommate eventually dug it out -- yuck.

i recently replaced an old disposer, and the previous home owners put everything in there! what a discusting mess!
A tip for you guys, only run the disposer with cold water, as this will allow grease to coagulate and not stick to your drain pipes.
also, to keep your drains clean, boil a large pan of water and pour it right into the sink, this will take most of the coatings off the inside of the drain pipes and keep your drains and traps free of debris.
thanks op for this, hope i receive it!

got some of these, work well to get rid of any odors. My fiance loves to stick any and everything down the disposal.

Good idea. I normally put a lemon or two down the disposer and it covers up the smell for a little while. Bleach'll probably do a better job.

I never, ever put any sort of grease or fat down the disposer. (We always have a glass jar under the sink for that) I had too many traumatic experiences cleaning our clogged waste line when I was a kid.

This stuff works, I bought some a while back from Home Depot, kind of expensive though.

Just using an orange or a lemon is cheaper. Good deal, though...

I think I tried this stuff a few years ago. Must not have done a whole lot since I never bought any more. I've debated removing my disposal because of the smell. I've had plumbers suggest removing it since it clogs more easily than without one.

Plumbers advise to not put coffee grounds in there since it clumps together and builds up in the disposal.

Also, as others said, don't put meat in there. Especially raw chicken!

I'd recommend mixing up a liquid solution with an oxygen bleach (Oxyclean, etc.) rather than using bleach. Should work just as well, and better for the environment as well as for your disposal. Bleach can't be too good for things like the rubber flaps on the drain, rubber seals/ gaskets, etc.
