Not thread crapping, just wanted to let people know that all the purina foods and most store bought foods have corn as a main ingredient. Dogs do not digest corn easily and it is just used by companies as a filler. Get the free sample but do not believe this food is actually much better than normal purina.

Ingredients for this food:

Lamb (natural source of glucosamine), corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal (natural source of glucosamine), pearled barley, brown rice, whole grain corn, whole grain wheat, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), dried beet pulp, calcium phosphate, natural flavor, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, salt, canola oil, soybean oil, malted barley flour, dried sweet potatoes, choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), garlic oil, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.

For comparison the ingredients for the food I feed my dogs:

Chicken, Brown Rice, Duck, Lamb Meal, Oatmeal, Pearled Barley, Potatoes, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols - source of Vitamin E, Citric Acid, and Rosemary Extract), Natural Flavor, Tomato Pomace, Canola Oil, Brewers Yeast, Lecithin, Choline Chloride, Carrots, Potassium Chloride, Whole Ground Flaxseed, Dried Kelp, Sodium Chloride, Parsley Flakes, Calcium Carbonate, Zinc Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplements, Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), Taurine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, L-Lysine, Manganese Sulfate, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B-2), Copper Proteinate, Copper Sulfate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Acetate, Inositol, Folic Acid (Vitamin B-9), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Thiamin Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), D-Activated Animal Sterol (source of Vitamin D-3), Biotin, Ethylene Diamine Dihydriodide (source of Iodine), Cobalt Sulfate, Vitamin K1 Supplement, Sodium Selenite.

Notice that there are no "by products" and there is no corn.

Sounds like something a TV actor (Dick Van Patten) would feed his dog

I really don't want to get into a pissing war but BilJac is not all it is cracked up to be.

If I were to list my prefered list it would be the following

As already elluded to, I feed Dick Van Patten Natural Performance
Nutro
Canidae
Innova
Royal Canin

If you are looking for something that is easy to find then go with Nutro.

Just for reference, look at the ingredients in BilJac:
Fresh Chicken By-Products (Organ Meat Only), Fresh Chicken, Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Fresh Chicken Liver, Brewers Dried Yeast, Cane Molasses, Eggs, Salt, Sodium Propionate (a preservative), DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Niacin, Biotin, Choline Chloride, Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Menaione, sodium Bisulfate Complex, (source of Vitamin K), D-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganous Oxide, Inositol, BHA (a preservative), Iron Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Potassium Iodine, Sodium Selenite.

By-products everywhere which means you really have no idea what is being used.

Like I said, look at what is in your pet's food. Or don't. No reason not to get a free sample of food though.

If you want an easy way to put a number grade to pet food then look at this system here.

Most people don't really care to know much about their dog food or are misinformed. Purina, Pedigree, Science Diet, Bil-Jac are all relatively low quality kibble. Vets just promote Science Diet because they make a nice chunk of change selling it.

I feed my puppy Innova. The company is great, www.naturapet.com is where I received my free sample. I usually just train my dog with kibble since he loves it so much.

Table scraps! Leftover chicken, leftover beef, leftover vegetables... as long as you keep their diet balanced for doggie nutritional needs.
Also, the ability to digest corn depends on how the corn is prepared for the animal/cooked, etc. If you want to be graphic, humans don't digest corn on the cob very well. (Look behind you before flushing.) I raise a LOT of animals; many of them simply can't digest whole or cracked corn... but give them steamed corn (Flakes), and they can digest much more of it.

Anyway, good deal, thanks OP.

I had a cat that lived to just about 20 on (mostly) Iams. A properly loved and cared-for cat will often break down in other ways before the lack of a "perfect" diet catches up with him/her.
