In order to register your domain you must have a technical contact and 2 servers with decent connections to the net. Without this, NIC will not allow you to register a domain. A lot of services offer to park your domain there for a nominal fee or for free, but you still have to pay for registering the domain yourself. Parking it is just to set the tech contact to that company and leave your domain there. In other words, its registered, its yours, its just not functional.

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. You can be your own technical contact, and you only need one machine with a decent connection. You can use your ISP's primary NS as your secondary, and your machine as a primary.

you "can" use your ISP's ns, but that won't give you much unless they sync their database with your primary, and not many ISPs will do this

Why not? When I signed up a while back for a few clients, they had to pay the year fee and then another $70 to the registrar.

Seems like this deal requires just the former, and then the latter is free. Maybe it's just me, but I'll take a free $70 if I can get it. I could understand it if their prices were absurd, but they look pretty reasonable.

SUGGESTION: Just to let people know, if you have a domain registered with Network Solutions, they have every legal right to take it away from for any reason. I suggest instead of getting a freebie, spend a little cash if you want to hold onto your domain. The safest domain register that gives you 100 percent ownership is GANDI.NET (approximately $11.50 a year). They are based in FRANCE, but I can sleep well at night knowing that my domain names are protected. I've done tons of research on this because I plan on a buying a couple high profile names soon for a pretty penny. If you are looking for free domain hosting (with DNS) go to BN3.com. They don't put banners on your webpage, but they do restrict your space to 5MB and allow very little bandwidth. It is nothing fancy, but if you need a nice spot to park it, this is it.

Ok, so if I don't have to pay $11 or let someone hose my site with ads, how is that not free? Money versus no money seems free to me.
