You know, he knew the dangers of the sport he played. Death was a real possibility. Yes, it's sad he died, but in my opinion it was his own fault (as someone else stated, he was KNOWN for bumping other drivers).

Deal with it and get over it.

Fellows, I've benn posting on this forum for a little while and I got to tell youI expected better from you guys, on both sides of the fence. Grow up. Some of us are Earnhardt fans and were not taking his death so well. Let it ride! If you don't like NASCAR or Earnhardt fine. But don't make fun of people who are fans and who are upset. And you Earnhardt/NASCAR fans you know not to wrestle with a pig, you get muddy and the pig likes it!

Well I for one don't enjoy watching guys drive around in cricles making left hand turns.. doesnt seem like much of a so-called sport to me. I think this Dale Earnhart death is getting alittle outta hand.. great sports figures die every year and we dont make this much outta of them. Lets blame NASCAR themself for allowing a FIFTY year old to compete.. that right there tells you these guys are not athletes of any nature when a 50 year old can still compete.. let it die (no phun intended).

referring to the guy who hit dale and sent him head on into the wall, I think maybe if it wasn't for him, Dale would have survived the crash. He hit Dale's car on the side and got stuck together for a while, and Dale probably can't do a thing to steer away from the wall...at least that was what it looked like in the papers.

Also, Dale wasn't wearing a full faced helmet(he liked the old fashion type)...and he died from head injuries...so probably it was as much his fault as anyones for ignoring safety precautions.

auyong, Dale died from brain trauma, not facial injuries. A full-face helmet would have made no difference. Maybe the HANS device would have saved him, maybe not. The tragedy in Dale Earnhardts death is that a modern day superstar died in front of his fans. Could you imagine Michael Jordan dying in game 7 of the NBA finals? Or Tiger woods on the 18th of the Masters? Your Sports heros are suppose to retire, play golf, open online sporting goods store. They are not suppose to die in front of your eyes. Race car drivers know and accept the inherent dangers associated with the sport. It's also what lures alot of the fans. We want to see a wreck in turn 4, but we also want to see the driver climb out of the car and raise their hand signaling they are OK.

Race car drivers are a different breed - they do what they do because it's their passion. There's no free agency or collective bargaining. They don't miss a race because of turf toe, or a pulled hamstring, or because their pee-pee hurts. And when the f*** up, they die.

a full faced helmet offers more protection than just the face. The overall construction of the helmet makes it sturdier and less susceptible to crushing. I did not say that he died from facial injuries, heck, who dies from facial injuries? I said he died from head injuries and in his case, probably his head got knocked so hard that his brain was smashed up inside.

It is completely opposite of worship, its called COMPASSION. We are compassionate especially for people with whom we had a good relationship with.

I'm 18 and all of my life I have been a huge Earnhardt fan, a few hours after his death I wrote this brief paragraph. I'm a bit saddened by some of the talk that's gone on in this thread, but I'd just like to share my short work in his honor.

____
Anyone who can call themselves my friend knows what a huge sports fan I am. I love all kinds of sports and watch them religiously. The first sport I ever became interested in watching was Stock Car Racing. I had a favorite driver. I loved that driver because dad loved that driver. He was my original sports hero. Before Michael Jordan, before Joe Montana, before Mark Messier or Chipper Jones, I cheered for my original hero. While I haven't watched many NASCAR races the past few years, I always kept up and followed the career of my first sports hero. I can only hope that as I mourn his death that he's up on that big speedway in the sky racing Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison. On a pace lap maybe he'll tap Elmo Langley on the back bumper just for a few laughs.

Hey Dale,
Tap him once for me, bud.
You will be missed.
____

Just one kid's feelings towards his hero...
Thanks to anyone who read this for your time.

No disrespect to this Dale fella, but this for one is totally off topic. This isn't a hot deal, and you guys know it, stop wasting forum space and take it to the OFF TOPIC forum. Whine and moan about it in their.

On another note....

I think racing is a waste of gas, I mean a bunch of cars driving in circles..... I wouldn't even consider it a sport.... not to say it isn't cool to drive, but I go to the arcade, I do practically the same thing playing Daytona USA, cept I don't waste gas, I don't have to deal with G forces or risking my life, and I'm nice and comfy in an air conditioned room. If Auto Racing is a sport, why isn't playing video games considered a sport?

Whats more important to you people? Having people like Dale die in these types of exibitions for your entertainment? The risk is very real, you know it, I know it, and the American people know it (Hehehe). Why get all attached to these sports figures when the sport itself is what kills some of them? Besides the man lived a better life then practically all of us could have ever dreamed of. I'd rather live 50 years having a great time, then 100 years living miserably. People die, get on with it.

Auyong-

Actually, Dale Earnhardt died not from hitting his head, but because his spinal cord was injured when his head flew forward while his body stayed secured in the seat. Stilinsm was right in thinking that the HANS system may have worked. If you think about it, the HANS system is simply a small leash connected to the back of a helmet.

IMHO, if I was gonna die in a car crash in NASCAR, I would want it to be in flames and explosions...something exciting. Dale's car kinda just....hit the wall hard.

Wow, an Evansville radio station getting this many posts. I never thought I'd see that, especially not WIKY.

I watched the race Sunday and felt as bad as all race fans when I found out that Mr. Earnhardt passed, but I will never understand why these tribute songs are even made. It cheapens the entire affair and makes it more of a media event instead of what it is: a racing legend tragically meeting his end.

So long, Dale... we'll miss you on Sunday.

Some people need to lighten up.. When I joke here, its not to disparage Dale at all, he was a great driver.

I just like to annoy the fans who worship him and get so easily offended.

And oh yes, someone very close to me died a few months ago.. I even make jokes about that. She would have loved those jokes, she had a great sense of humour..

Well, he has gone to a better place, ole Dale, now maybe he can hang out up there with his brother, Luigi..
