We are pleased to announce the 1.0 release of the Wing Commander Privateer Remake. The original Privateer is a well loved game, with incredible graphics and gameplay for its day. Built on an open source codebase, the Remake is a community effort to bring the universe of the original into the 21st century, playable on all modern operating systems (win,mac,linux), and in 3d glory.

Privateer gives you the freedom to carve your own path in the Wing Commander universe. Opportunity abounds in the Gemini Sector. Wedged between the unknown frontier and the Kilrathi Empire, Gemini is home to various competing factions with which you can choose to align yourself.

Upgrade your ship or trade it in to deal with the demands of a Privateer. Find your fortune by logging into the mission computer, or take your chances with seedy characters in bars. Meet up with Sandoval in New Detroit, tilt back a glass with Demetria in a Munchen bar in the Tingerhoff System. Make your way as a trader, traitor, bounty hunter, or pirate. Only you can imagine what you might encounter beyond the frontier. Happy privateering!

i'm assuming it doesn't have the full screen/no cockpit mode that was introduced in wing commander armada and in the games after that.

time to find the old privateer strategy guide i have packed away somewhere.

This is by one of the best post I have ever seen. this game is beyond a classic.... it just just assume.... Privateer is the best space simiumtlion game ever made. On top fot hat, it adds a freelance business feel.

No it's not an mmorpg. it's one of the best single player space combat games available. Well... was available. no xp box can run it and if u use win 98 for some reason on modern hardware u gotta use those proggies that physically slow your comp down to play it.

maybe DOSBOX will help for the xp users (?)

i don't know for sure.... i'm just downloading it now....

edit: holy moly... 180MB at ~8KB/sec... 6+ hrs. I hope it speeds up.

looks like some people have mixed experience with WC Privateer using dosbox

looks like ~80% on the "supported" scale

btw: ibiblio is terribly slow for me today... switched to another download site (easynews) and it's speeding along nicely at 180KB/sec

edit: the 80% compatibility appears to be on the original game... not the remake

I assume you're referring to the original version not working on XP. The remake, which I downloaded and installed last night, has been stable the entire time I played (a couple hours). I was using the rig in my sig, BTW...
