this have been a free trial download since Maya 3 . It has a nasty water mark when u render and it doesn't do all the bells and whistles that the full maya does. But, if you want to learn one of the best 3d programs, then its a great way for get it, without spending the $2000. If you want to learn 3dsmax, they also offer a free version called Gmax, that does everything except character studio i think.

It's probably the same ast the 4.0 PLE (I think it was 4.0), it'll have a watermark on every frame that you render, and it uses a different algorithm for saving files so that you cannot transfer files between the REAL Maya 5.0, and the 5.0 PLE. (So that you can't make something on the PLE, then render it with the real version at a school or something.

Yeah, the watermark on this thing makes it near impossible to do anything with, and if you do make something worth seeing... it'll look like crap because of the watermark :-\


It's worth noting that A|W offers a student learning liscence for $200, which is good for one year with the software, you can do this twice. After that, if you choose to purchase Maya, the $200/$400 can be applied to the cost of Maya, which is (I think) $2,500.


This sounds like a total rip-off for anyone who is just looking for something to learn, but this is a pretty good deal for graphics professionals, seeing as a company may strike a deal with you (or be able to get you more of a discount from A|W) to cover the cost for Maya if you use it on a regular basis at work.

Actually I was looking at the PLE FAQ on their website and the hardware rendering and cell shading in Maya 5 has been disabled in the PLE, along with fur, cloth and fluid dynamics. MentalRay rendering is also out as well.

You CAN, however, import .MA and .MB files into PLE to work with, which is immensely helpful to anyone who MAY have created some work on a cracked version of Maya and needs a way to "launder" the models so they can be posted online and used in portfolios (so they can get a job in the industry) without incurring the wrath of A/W.

On a related note, I was watching a special about South Park on VH1, and it looks a lot like they use Maya to make the show, based on the short clips they showed of the show's production. It's hard to be sure without watching the show again and looking more closely (since 3ds MAX ripped off the look of the timeline from Maya starting with version 4), but what they showed sure looks like the Maya interface. If so, that is almost as funny as them hiring George Clooney to be the voice of a gay dog.

I downloaded Maya4PLE prior (ok, a while ago), and just noticed that this one is Maya5PLE. Not for me, but I have people who don't have broadband and want to check it out. Thanks for the post.
