I had PacBell DSL since last year. It's been great until May of this year. I am also one of those people who have a static IP address. The service been great, but turn ugly this may. At first, I was not able to download huge files (until now, I am still trying to finish download RedHat linux OS). Then all of the sudden, I am no longer connected to the net. On the modem (Alcatel 1000) light, everything is fine(the sync light is green). When they ping me, it seems as of my computer is off. It takes the CO people about 5 minutes to fix the problem, but getting to the CO techs is a b*tch! The level 1 & 2 tech are nothing but moron trying to blame you for the fault. They think your computer crashed. They had you reinstall everything. After they hassle you through all those bulls...then they apologize that there is nothing they can do but to escale the problem. I spoke to a few supervisor and all they do is just apologize. According to the CO people, it's a known problem in Davis/Sacramento area. I asked why don't they fix it? They said they don't know why it's doing that(It's a new technology). I ask if I can cancel my service with them, they said sure if I pay the 200 early termination fee. To this point, I am just piss! I pay $50 for the DSL service, but what I got is nothing but hassle, and a partially working DSL for only half a month (the other half of the month, it's down because it's drop out from the router table). From today on, I will call their tech support and report the problem and collect case numbers(detail logs). When I collect about a month of these data, and if the problem is still not fix, I am bring this data to the media. I will let PacBell & SBC know that apologizing is not an acceptable answer!

Also, if you pay attention to their ad, they promiss a 384k/sec guarantee and 1.5mbps cap downstream and 128k/sec upstream. And if you look at their terms and condition, they pretty much say that the hell if you, they don't guarantee anything. Isn't that a false advertisement? When I sign up the service, I was promiss that, but now the TOS stayed otherwise, can I do something about it??

If you can shine some light to where I can file complaints against an ISP, please let me know. You can email me at sworshs@hotmail.com

Thank you for taking the time reading this.

P.S. I live near the signature theatre in Davis, so the CO is very close to my house!

i just got my pacbell dsl about 2 months ago.. i missed the static.. so i got a friggin piece of crap dyanamic. .. i gotta log in every time i turn on my computer.. and the modme they gave me is a piece of crap with sorry ass drivers. it doesn't load up when i boot up.. i have to unplug the power.. then plug it back. then it loads.. then i log in with my username and junk.

anyways,
they did CAP my line at 300 something... when he installed it, i loaded a speedtest page and said... how come its so much slower than my friends, then he called his buddy from the station and uncapped my line from 300 to 750kbps.. now i'm capped at 750... better than nothing.. but i still want my 1.5mb

Wowo .. Lucky I cancelled my DSL with pacbell and placed another order with another company for the service. I ordered with them, waited for a month for installation, nothing happened, so i called them, and they were not able to give me an answer as to when it can be installed. I did that for a week. So 5 weeks today with nothing to show, so I just cancelled my order and placed another an order with northpoint instead, now I am almost there, just a few more days and people from northpoint should be here to do the internal wiring

This deal worked out pretty well for me. I signed up through Bell Atlantic in the Northeast. The rep I spoke to sounded like he was blown away by everything I was getting for free...$39.95/month, NO contract (just pay month-by-month), first month free, free installation, free internal card, free modem that will work with both my Macintosh and PC, free splitter installation, and to top it off, NO shipping charge on the modem, despite what is written on the Web site. The rep did a lot of manual overrides to make sure I wouldn't be charged for anything other than the monthly fee. The only drawback is that Bell Atlantic can't get out here until August 7th, but that would be the case with any BA offer right now. I was also told that I can back out at any time if I find another deal prior to installataion. All in all, a great deal. Thanks to the original poster.

One question: anyone know if you can keep the modem if you decide to cancel the service? That's the one thing I forgot to ask.

How did you get your Homeconnect ADSL PCI modem for only $148? I cannot find it for less than $200. I am planning on getting the dsl modem for free with the intelweboutfitter.com service, but I cannot find it for less than $148. Any help would be appreciated.

I've hab Bell Atlantic DSL for 2 mos now. I had one problem, I called waited about 30secs to talk to a rep. Tehy had it up about 6hrs later some router problems. Anyway the next day a rep calls me up and asks if my DSL is operating properly as the lines are testing good on thier side. That what I consider good service, and the speed woah... I got the standard 640Kbps DSL $50 a month(grumbles). I get downloads 60KB/s atleast 75% of the time and 70KB/s or better 10% of the time. Rough estimates, but it seems more often than not the connection COOKS... Not too bad considering I got an external Westell DSL Modem for $99... Now it's time to move, and I won't get a place that is too far from the BA offices cuz I cannot live without my DSL... Well, no until the new Sprint wireless 2-way broadband is widely available.

Bell Atlantic DSL service is spotty. My connection's on old infrastructure. Static IP, but unfortunately the routing infrastructure breaks every four to six weeks, and they don't fix it until the AM. They usually fix it at 9am on Monday, so I know it's not like they can't fix it, they just won't. If it breaks Friday at 6pm, you're down for the rest of the weekend - *poof*.

My friends who have PPPoE service from BA report that it too, is spotty. Probably the same problem, but since they can't keep their IP while the problem is ongoing, they can't "see" what, if anything, is being broadcast by the router.

After my third weekend outtage in less than a year, I had a second DSL line installed from Speakeasy/Covad. I use the BA line for surfing/gaming until it gives out, then reroute to the other line. The Speakeasy line runs my gameserver. I'm quite pleased with their service, and am upgrading to SDSL from Speakeasy/Covad - whenever BA gets off their asses and installs the new local loop I need. Bell Atlantic is known to be... uncooperative... in the area I'm located in.

I am waiting patiently for the day that third party companies can install wiring and offer service that does NOT rely on existing, monopolistically controlled, telephone and cable wiring. As soon as that day comes, I'm ditching BA. Their service is about as bad as it gets, and it definitely comes from the, "We're the phone company. We can do anything we want to," frame of mind.

Getting back to the topic at hand, DSL "modems", for the most part, are dependent on the type of DSL offered. ADSL, RADSL, SDSL, IDSL, etc. Not only that, but there are different variations within those subcategories. Don't buy a modem unles you know for a fact that it will work with your provider's network. I myself have to buy another modem, a SpeedStream 5250, for my new SDSL line. The Speedstream 5260 I'm using now will be a paperweight after the new line's installed - different protocol, different modem.

As to the $10 price reduction on 640/90 DSL service, Bell Atlantic will reduce your bill to $39.95 a month if you agree to have that bill put on your phone bill instead of billed to your credit card. Oddly enough, mine has always been billed to my phone bill. Oh well, I get $10 off now.

Just my $0.02

sbc.com ownes pacbell, that's why it's crap.

dsl from southwestern bell is crap just like at pacbell.

they don't even appear to monitor their own net lines--you gotta call them and tell them the f*cking thing is broken, or it'll be down all day until you finally call them.

Does anyone know where you could actually buy an ADSL external modem (like the alcatel one) without signing up with a provider? Price doesn't really matter as much in my case, just need the modem. Thanks guys!

I am a celeron guy myself but I could get a PIII 700 from OnVia just to cash in on this deal. Does anybody know if Intel will pick up the cost of a router/modem in Washington, D.C.? Is there an expiration date on the offer?

I would find out myself, but not having a PIII makes it impossible to get the details on the offer.

Thanks

Lmandrake, I have a Celeron II 566 overclocked to 850. Many diagnostic programs identify my CPU as a Pentium III. I haven't tried it yet, but I wonder if the Intel site would also ID the CPU as a Pentium III. I tried it this evening and report back.

I just called. The deal is only through 7/31/00.

While the web site told me that I had service on my line, she told
me they were just finishing setting up service in my area. She couldn't give me the deal or hold it for me either.

She did say she could e-mail me when there is service in my area(which should be soon). And she also said that there will be a new promotion next month or they may extend the current one.

Good luck to all that can get on this, because it is a good deal.

The website asks you to agree to dl an .exe file. This is to determine if you have a PIII. Does anyone know what it does? I mean how does it check and what else does the program do? I don't know how to check the source code as I don't know C/++ and am learning Perl. TIA.

I have the pacbell dsl. My linespeed has gone from 1.5Mbps to anything between 700Kbps - 1196Kbps depending on the time of day. It worked all the time at 1500 and 1450 kbps before a two months ago. It has significantly dropped. I also notice if I am dling a large file my dl speed drops until I get to about 5KB/sec. (large=50MB - 100MB) That's a big drop from 150KBps. Anyway, the usenet cap sucks and the email is unusable as I have lost emails with cc's to myself. They also delete any mail left on their server too long. Bunch of idiots. I am glad I didn't go to work for them.

As I suspected, Intel is fully capable of writing a proggie that can tell a Celeron from a PIII.

Again, if anybody knows or can check to see if the offer is good for Washington, D.C. I would be very grateful.

Thanks.

I get 1058 kbps, and I'm less than a mile from the switch. Is this good or bad? Pac Bell. How can I check the speed on the USENET? Or should I just assume it is 128 k?

Otherwise it has been reliable, but the email is funky. I use a bigfoot address and have it forwarded to my Pacbell address and my hotmail backup address, and the hotmail gets it sooner.

And truly idiotic customer service!!! But are there truly better choices in the Bay area that are 1. faster, 2. same price, and 3. reliable, and 4. good support.????

All this moaning and whining makes me REALLY glad I have my trusty @home cable modem. I've had it since October of last year (the first week the service was available here in Indiana), and have had a total of 1 very brief downtime during a minor server outage. I've reset the modem less than 10 times since it was installed! I have 8 computers hooked up through a server, and everything works great.

Their install teams out here suck though. They completely hosed my computer when they tried to put a network card in (network cards and video cards do NOT like sharing IRQ's!!!), and forced me to reinstall windows.

Not only that, I'm in a low usage area, so I get out of this world speeds!! I downloaded Win2k SP1 in under 5 minutes!!! 285KB/s!!! Talk about freaking fast!!! That's over 2Mb/s!! Their tech support is pretty good too (I've only had to call once, and the level 1 rep was able to fix my email problem, which was a server side issue).

And all this for $40 a month! WAY better than DSL. And I can say that from experience. I had GTE ADSL while attending Purdue, and it sucked. Down at least once a week, and slow as hell (1Mb/256Kb split).

And no I don't work for Comcast or @home. I'm (unfortunately) a Best Buy lacky for the time being. Gotta pay for school somehow (
