Hey guys, I have an HTPC that I plan to rip all of my DVDs (and eventually Blu-Rays) to. Problem is, I don't know what to rip my DVDs with. In Ubuntu I used Thoggen, but that's not available for Vista AFAIK. I tried using HandBrake, but I cannot get movies to come out well. They're all choppy or just plain corrupt. Yes, I am using AnyDVD. Besides, copy protection isn't the problem. I'm trying to rip an unprotected copy of The Terminator and I'm still getting choppiness.

Thanks in advance,
~gszx1337

DVDFab, the only one I use now. Free trial, I think it's even free if you just want to rip DVD's to DVD's. Well worth the price though.

There are a few options out there, but not many free ones. I personally like Fairuse Wizard for DVD and Ripbot264 for bluray. The free version of Fairuse restricts your file size to 700 MB, Ripbot is free.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll post the results when I get back. Also, feel free to recommend trials, so long as I can see how the rip comes out. I'm getting tired of software that only rips 5 minutes of a DVD.

DVD Decrypter for DVDs. (No blu-ray drive so haven't tried, plus it's old software)

Haven't found a CD or DVD I couldn't make an ISO of.

Check out makeMKV, it doesn't compress anything it just copies the video/audio/sub into a MKV. It does blueray too.

I have always been a fan of handbrake and for burning I use anydvd's companion clonedvd which will also rip. I tried dvdfab but always had issues with it.

Yup. Isn't that the famous DVD-Jon's legacy? No DVD can resist to be stripped by DVD Decrypter, because DVD belongs to IEEE standard and the DVD Decripter cracked it.

Blu-Ray is a different story and there isn't a free utility that I know of. Actually I only know two that rip Blu-Ray discs - AnyDVD and DVDFab.

I used RipBot264 to rip The Terminator successfully. Thanks mc866. I'll use HandBrake (HandBrake lets me rip both the default track and the commentary in one file) and if it fails, I'll use RipBot264. I haven't tried the other programs since RipBot264 worked. If for some reason RipBot264 fails, I'll try the other programs. Thanks to everyone else who helped.

i don't know if dvddecryptor uses DVD-Jon's code, but it was made by the awesome LightningUK who now makes the awesome Imgburn. i believe there are some dvd's that dvddecryptor can't rip, but i think they are mostly disney discs that don't conform to the standards.

i will never get rid of my copies of the last dvddecryptor and dvdshrink.

I've tried about Pavtube blu-ray ripper, a nice utility, especially like its function of "Directly Copy", with it, I can copy my tons of Blu-ray movies to an external hard drive, so that avoid being scratched by my little kids. In addition, it adopts advanced audio and video sync tech, which enables you to have high output quality without any audio/video out of sync problems.

I'm interesting in doing this too, so this thread has been helpful.

I use DVD Shrink to make images of everything, and burn them to rewritable dvds when I want to watch them on a TV.

As long as you have AnyDVD to break encryption, then DVD Shrink is the way to go. For Blu-Ray I use tsMuxer and HDConvertToX, which is just a GUI that uses command line encoders like x264 and Xvid.

Haven't found a CD or DVD I couldn't make an ISO of.

DVD Decrypter got shut down, which is why it hasn't been update. It's still floating around out there though. It's the only one I use, though I find it has trouble decoding recent Sony Pictures DVDs. They must be using a new type of DRM scheme.

A bit off-topic, but is it legal to rip a copy of a DVD for personal use only? I realize this is somewhat of a gray area, but with the number of programs allowing ripping audio CDs for personal music use, I'm surprised to see that there aren't as many programs allowing the same for DVDs. Many blu-rays come with a digital copy as well, which is the direction I'd like to go in.

I'd really love to back up my DVD collection for portability and to avoid scratches, but I'm not a fan of keeping a hard drive full of questionable material.

Thanks.
