Just tried DVDShrink then Nero and works like a champ on Band of Brothers shrunk down to 1 disc with menus and extras, which always choked on DVDXCopy which wanted 2 discs. I also tried Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and some others. For me, it works good except when you try the maximum compression option, which gave black backgrounds a brownish tint. Everything else works great!

The world of DVD ripping is soooooo complicated and opinionated Somebody needs to make a guide that evaluates all guides Maybe make a grid with: Quality, Speed, Simplicity, Customization (i.e. ability to retain specific extras)

Then I could say my preferences:

1) Simplicity
2) Quality
3) Customization
4) Speed

And it would pick the best guide/software combo for me!

Hmmm sounds like a long nasty project

dvdshrink 2.3 is out and it is uses an entirely new compression algorithm. Much better IMHO. Also it fixes many many bugs that were introduced with 2.0 (june 5th). I have a mirror on my site. Will try to write a guide for the new 2.3 in the next couple of days.

I love this program for short DVD's. You can make the feature 100% original quality and shrink the quality of the special features if you want the whole thing, or cut them and have all the menus. Great!

IC7 is way to slow for me, during the transcoding phase anyways. I will stick to 15 min rip & decrypt, 30 min transcode (DVD2One), and 15 min burn (4x).

IC7 put me at 15 min rip and decrypt (dvd decrypter), 3 HOURS to transcode, and 15 min to burn. lol, no brainer to me.

Now that you mention it, every movie I borrow from a friend that uses IC7 is blocky and has a lot of artifacts. He's got the latest version, but it tiles and is blocky as hell. IC7 is utter trash in my experiences with it, not to mention the slowness. Argue of you must, but I will stick to my methods that I KNOW works flawlessly.

I have a question for all you dvd rippers out there. I'm new to the game and have been using the dvdshrink (tho i have an old version need to upgrade). Just wondered if any of these other programs support dual proc's ?? I have a dual xeon server I use for my burning needs and I haven't noticed any that support dual procs, they only run on one cpu and not the other. Is it the same with all these programs? Let me know if there is somewhere else I should be asking this

Twingo, if you are using NT/2000/XP Pro, any of the programs on the market -- or any programs, period -- can take advantage of multiple processors in that one processor can be dedicated to running your choice of programs. You can set up a DVD-copy setup on CPU#1 and be running Internet Explorer, or whatever, on CPU#2. (You probably knew all of that already.)

I don't think that any software packages reencode DVD's utilizing dual-procs. If speed is really, really important to you, you may want to get a second computer, so that one can be processing away at whatever task while you actively compute on the second. This was my solution (actually, with three computers).

Thanks for the update.

Sometimes I just use this to remove the beginning logo after DVD2Oneing it. Love it.

and for those who want speed and just the movie on one DVD, decrypted and without the menus, intros, and bonus stuff, DVDXCOPY XPRESS --- not to be confused with DVDXCOPY --- is a good one for NOVICE and advance users (if you choose to use it (your choice)). did a DVD 9 to DVD 5 in 20 mins. real clean, pop the disc in and the movie started. draw back is no chapters search and one audio track (you can't choose the audio. it defaults on the first audio track (if you want more info go to their site). other than that, InstantCopy, DVDDecrypter (free) are my favs.

- NOTE: check out DVDRHELP for info, guides, and tools. they have good resources for novice and advance and most of your questions can be answered there. and choose the one that works best for your needs, skills, and system

This of course is what both DVD2One (need DVD Decrypter first) and DVD Shrink do, but you get to keep chapter search as well. Excellent quality and very fast. DVD2One is about $40, while DVD Shrink is free.

I ordered InstantCopy but I am not sure how is it better than DVDshrink for movies larger than 5GB?
You need to shrink in order to fit it ona disk so you will lose the quality.

Why InstantCopy is better?
Just wondering.
Thanks

Instany Copy while it takes longer, does a better quality job of reducing the movie size. Anytime you reduce the size you will lose quality, Instant Copy loses the least of them after CCE of course, which takes even longer and more learning to do.

The new version of dvdshrink is definitely an improvement. Its has the best interface of all the programs out there and is the simplest imo. IC is a teeny bit better, but its super slow. Plus, this is free, of course, that only matters if you're not warezing it. I like this program.

after using dvdshrink, when trying to form an .iso file using imgtool, it says it needs a VTS_VIDEO folder, yet DVDSHRINK gives me no such folder. Do I just create one? and if so, what files do I put in there? Also, do I leave the VTS_AUDIO folder empty?

I believe every Video-DVD has a folder called "VIDEO_TS" with all the Video files (*.VOB, *.IFO, etc.) inside it - many softwares expect this folder to be present, but DVD Shrink allows you to save your files into any folder. Just create a sub-folder with this name, and move all the files that DVD Shrink created inside this one - hopefully this should work.

And you can even skip the "AUDIO_TS" folder, as not all DVD's include it in their structure, and many of them carry an empty folder for compatibility sake.
