To elaborate a bit, this is a free info kit + fridge magnet for completing a short survey. They don't ask for your phone number, but need street and e-mail. I'm so glad this didn't turn out to be some kind of crackpot magnet-therapy crap.

My kids get ear infections all the time.

Augmentin is an antibiotic for kids. Infact one of my boys is on it now.

I'm curious to see what the info kit has to say.

If you have an ear infection treat it with Augmentin?

Go somewhere and look for EAR CANDLES

Wholefoods usually has them or look for some health place

Lay on your side
Put one of these candles in your ear ( follow mfg warnings etc)
Let it burn away - it will suck the moisture and wax out of your head

Regarding milk, I think the root of the problem is that cows are given lots of hormones to make them grow faster, bigger, and/or to produce more milk. Our cows are basically pumped up on all kinds of freaky hormones.

They pass that on in milk, and dairy products.

In centuries past, when cows had a normal diet, they produced normal milk, which has been a staple of human diet.

Rather than avoid dairy products, I would like to see "organic cows" who are not given freaky hormones, and who produce a natural milk.

Meanwhile, many people stop producing lactase as they grow older, making them incapable of digesting dairy products. These folk will get cramps even from organic milk. Lacose intolerance is best solved by taking capsules of bacteria who produce lactase.

So, in regard to the horrors of dairy products, I believe there are two relevant factors: cows today are on hormones, and secondly, some people are simply lactose intolerant. If we had normal cows, and if a person is not lactose intolerance, then dairy should be ok. If people have been doing somehting for centuries, then it has stood the test of time: humans have been consuming dairy products around the globe since time began, so it is inherently ok (provided the cows are normal, which they are not today).

Very good info. But I have 1 comment and 1 strong disagreement...

>>>Rather than avoid dairy products, I would like to see "organic cows" who are not given freaky hormones, and who produce a natural milk.<<<

Horizon produces an organic milk; it is pretty easy to find, even in 'regular' supermarkets.

>>>If people have been doing somehting for centuries, then it has stood the test of time: humans have been consuming dairy products around the globe since time began, so it is inherently ok<<<

I have to disagree with this vehemently - just because people have been foolish enough to do something in the past, does not make it 'OK'. People have been murdering each other for centuries too, and I think you would agree that murder is not 'inherently OK'.

The overwhelming scientific evidence is that milk consumption by humans is not OK. Milk is a perfect product for helping to turn a baby calf into a 600 pound cow in 6 months; after that age, cows generally stop drinking milk. Milk was not designed for human consumption; it is basically *pus* - who would want to drink pus? Homo sapiens are virtually the only species on the planet that continues to drink cow's milk en masse beyond the age of 6 months. It is a MYTH (propagated by the Milk Board and others), that milk is the 'best source of calcium'...yes, milk and other dairy products are A SOURCE of calcium, but certainly NOT the best source. For instance, just one tablespoon of dairy produces up to a QUART of mucus in the human body. One can obtain calcium without the many undesirable effects of dairy, from sources such as kale and other leafy greens, from sea vegetables (which, by weight, are the single best source of calcium and are abundant in trace minerals which are no longer found in our nutrient-depleted diets), and other sources, without resorting to drinking pus. On top of the lactose intolerance that you mentioned (which is highly prevalent among people of color and Mediterranean people), many people are also allergic to both milk and the pesticides and other chemicals found in today's cow's milk. Also, consider that the fact that the countries with the HIGHEST consumption of dairy products have the HIGHEST rate of osteoporosis. That is certainly true in the US; while in Japan, where dairy consumption is MUCH lower (and where they consume large amounts of sea vegetables), so too is the prevalance of osteoporosis. I could go on and on till the cows come home :Q about why milk is not only unnecessary, but is in fact harmful to human health, but I think you get the idea.

Homo sapiens are the ONLY species on the planet that continues to drink cow's milk beyond the age of 6 months.

With all due respect, that is utter crap! I can tell you did not grow up on a farm and observe the "barn cats" around milking time. Cats were welcome in the barns to keep the rodent population in check and were rewarded for their assistance with fresh, warm COW milk which they tucked away with gusto.

The only reason a LOT of animals do not consume cow milk is because they can't get it; try your household pets on it and you will see it, no matter what their ages. No guarantee that ALL of them will suck up the milk, just as some humans don't care for it, but most will consume it with relish.

Well put, Justincase, but I'm afraid we're in the minority. Milk is so overrated in the US.

Tried it with 2 cats; they had no interest in the stuff. I guess they are well-educated cats

When I first saw this, I thought it was a kit to give you a free ear infection.

Hmm, I'll pass on this offer anyway.

Kids get ear infections for a variety of reasons...
tobacco smoke is the major correctable factor.
Genetics is one of the major non-correctable factors.

Augmentin is a huge antibotic. Very powerful and very
expensive. Amoxicillin is the first line drug and is much
less expensive. Many doctors (especially in other countries)
will not give antibotics until a trial of tylenol has failed... as
most ear infections resolve without antibotics.
Most doctors wouldn't give Augmentin unless a trial of
amoxicillin as failed.

Only children with cow's milk allergy (rare) are more likely to
get otitis media. In fact, probably children being exposed to
any allergic substance is more likely to have otitis media.
Quote...

<< CONCLUSIONS. The possibility of food allergy should be considered in all pediatric patients with recurrent serous otitis media and a diligent search for the putative food allergen made for proper diagnostic and therapeutic intervention. >>

Breast milk, of course, is probably protective.
In typical, nonallergic children... there is probably no difference...
Let me quote two studies...
1.

<< Children in the breastfed group (exclusive breastfeeding for at least 5 months) have less otitis episodes than the milk-adapted formula group, but the difference was not statistically different (0.41 +/- 0.68 vs 0.69 +/- 1.01 episodes; p = 0.11). >>

2.

<< Finally, a large milk intake both in connection with breast-feeding and later in life seemed to reduce the frequency of otitis. >>

3.

<< Risk factors for recurrent otitis media were studied in 115 otitis-prone children. A group of 323 children was used as controls. The care of children in day care centers, parental smoking and a low socioeconomic status of the family were associated with recurrent otitis media. The duration of breast feeding, the child's age at introduction of cow's milk-based feeding and allergy were not associated with recurrent otitis media. --Pediatr Infect Dis 1986 Jan-Feb;5(1):30-2-- >>

How the HELL did this freebie turn into the debate of the century on cow's milk. Give me a freakin break! Ear infections are a part of childhood, get one, take an antibiotic and get over it!

Here I was trying to get an ear infection the hard way! I should have gotten an ear infection kit...it would have been a lot easier than licking my finger and sticking it in my ear 30 times a day

<< The best 'treatment' for most kids' otitis media (ear infections) is no treatment at all...simply get them off all dairy products and the problem usually goes away. Consumption of dairy products is the single most common contributing factor to ear infections >>

Since my kids don't drink or eat very many dairy products, I question the validity of the sites claims. I suppose your saying the surgery that my son has had twice for tubes was no good either. Yet he does not get ear infections any longer. Hmmmmmmmm.

BTW: Zithromax works much better than Augmentin on my children. It depends on the antibiotic and the person who is taking it.
