Compusa's free DVD burner is probably almost worth as much as the Student & Teacher Office.

In addition, if you buy the 2k3 at Compusa, you can get a Viewsonic V35 Pocket PC for $99. If not, you can get it for $149. $99 is really awesome for a PPC I think I've only seen one previous opportunity to get a PPC for under $100.

Is Compusa going to be checking IDs? Seems like they will be losing there shirt on people who are buying the Student Teacher edition.

The store is not responsible for verifying the qualifications for Students and Teachers edition. It is only a requirement of the EULA. I'm sure Microsoft is sponsoring this anyway, so they will not lose anything. This edition is available for ALL school age kids, kindergarten through college. Validate what ID's??? Ever seen a five year old with an ID?

Typically "education" editions of software require proof that you are a student. I know that this version of Office is an exception, Microsoft would rather get $150 out of the home user instead of everyone getting a copy elsewhere(internet, borrow from work, etc.). My question was will Compusa expect ID to prevent abuse of their offer considering they will be losing a lot of money of the deal.

You spend $150 on the Office student/teacher,

CompUSA eats the following in Bundle rebates(assuming you buy one of each free item).

Inkjet Print $50
CD-Rs $7
Media Reader $20
Norton Antivirus $30
InkLink $20
DVD Copy $55
Flash Drive $30

+ $170 on the DVD player or +$80 on the DVD Burner

That's $382 in rebates with the Portable DVD Player(not counting the PDA).

Or maybe they will require proof of student/teacher when they reject your rebates. I really don't feel like getting DELL'ed again.

Hehe, I got my Toshiba e335 Pocket PC FAR in the Staples deal. That was sweet...

Also remember that if you are not upgrading your anti-virus software you will not get the $30 rebate for Norton's AV 2004. I will skip it, personally.

I took a look at the requirements

http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/students/doyouqualify.mspx

It would appear the requirements will allow quite a few people to qualify. Allowing K-12 students, college students,"A household member of a person who qualifies", among some of the people whom qualify.

I was taking a gander at the O2K3 Students and Techer's boxes at my store's stockroom the other day and noticed MS is being VERY generous with O2K3. There is a big green starburst on the Students and Teacher's box that states you are allowed to install it on up to THREE comouters in your home if you qualify. That is pretty spiffy. I guess after they saw how much revenue they made off of the Office XP Students and Teachers that decided they really want to push it this year. Even though I will be able to get O2K3 from the MS retail site soon for (almost) free, I am really thinking about picking up the S&T edition (since my wife is taking evening accounting classes right now) from OM and getting the printer and camera bundle as a Christmas gift for my parents. I wonder if any of the online coupons will work with this deal? (Doubtful, since OM is taking $250 off the bundle at the register using a coupon code and the then last $50 is from a MIR).

I think they're being very friendly with the student edition because college students(the people who would most likely actually need powerpoint and excel and access and word) have a tendency to "borrow" CD-R's of Office and install it if you tell them the price is $500...and then even at $150 you'd have a hard time getting people to pay up...

Offer it for $150, loosen up restrictions so your FAMILY might buy it for the home and install it there while also installing it on your computer(3 computer allowance) and said college students' parents might decide that this could be a cheap way to get in on office through their kid and pony up the $150 for it, instead of the kid bringing home the CD-R one day.

Simultanously, offer absurd promotions so it's pretty much senseless to try and resist...this is of course the usual MS method of doing things...I think the initial blitzkrieg of promos is just to "seed" the market with copies of their latest stuff so eventually those people still running 2000 will come into incompatibilities with people who made something in 2003(I actually am not sure if 2003 has any incompatibilities, but there probably are). Thus this will chain react and force said 2000 users to upgrade. If those 2000 users are part of corporations or whatever, they can't really not pay for a license and not get caught, so money flows into MS. Pretty clever anyway. I mean, you KNOW there's a motive behind paying you $500 to buy a copy of software that doesn't cost that much. Even assuming everybody bought the $400 copy MS obviously wouldn't be making any money paying out on the CompUSA promo, but the purpose of this excersize is of course not to make money, but to get enough people on 2003 so that they can make money off the people who will be forced later on to buy it in order to remain compatible with 2003.

Ah...MS tactics. Of course, who cares...I'm gonna get paid to buy this software =P I happen to need a copy of office anyway...this stupid laptop I'm on came preloaded with Works and it stinks... I installed OpenOffice for now, but I'd rather have the real Office anyway...and if I can install it at home too, sweet.

A word to the wise: If you are going to go in on the CompUSA deal (which is truly a mighty deal), go to CompUSA TODAY and buy all the goodies, then bring the recipt back tomorrow, and bring it, plus a copy of Office 2003, to the customer service counter and have them return/re-sell the stuff you got. If you don't, you almost surely won't get some of this stuff.

I went to CompUSA today and they had:

Canon printer: 3 in stock
Seiko InkLink: 3 in stock
Portable DVD player: 33 in stock
Viewsonic V35: 2 in stock

You can guess your odds of getting the stuff tomorrow...

Yup...Buy the $150 academic version and get all the free stuff. That should appeal to a CheapArse like yourself. I know it appeals to me

I don't know what MS is trying to pull by pricing that academic version that cheaply, allowing you to install THREE copies of the academic version (vs. 1 of any other version) and qualifying half the population to buy it (I think half the OS buying population probably falls in the catagory of either students or parents of students, especially since then define students as anyone from K-12 as well as college).

Well, I decided not to get it. I have office Xp, and figure I don't need 2003. But all that stuff, until I checked it out. The phone system is nice, but the portable dvd player is rather crapy, 5" with a battery that will probably not even last through a whole movie. I figured it wasnt worth all the rebate hassle.
