Pay attention: if you want to e-File your state tax it has to be done at the same time with federal. I used this site last year and I've got my return posted to my checking account in 7 days.

I used to own stock in this company and they have a GREAT tax preparation interface. Also they archive and store all your tax forms for you in PDF form over the years, so when you go looking for your 1999 "tax paid" or "adjusted gross income" and you don't know what it is, you can just go back and look it up online. Definitely a hot deal.

Can you trust them with your personal information? What you happen to all your address, income, interest, stocks, bonds, mortgage and retirement plan information? Man! come to think of it, I would think twice before trying to file online. Just a thought!

3kingdom may have answered your question. They probably make money from advertisements and from selling name, address and email information.

HDVest is a VERY reputable company. Like I said earlier, I used to own stock in their company. They are actually operating on a VERY profitable business model and do extremely well. Their stock is way undervalued, I just had to get out due to financial difficulties at the time. They have about 6,500 CPA's as part of their financial network. HDVest recommends financial advisors to people in their area and the charge a service fee to their customers and to the financial advisors. This is how they make money as well as internal financial planning and asset holding. Companies like this do not sell others information. They merely offer this free tax preparation as a thank you to their customers and financial advisors. Also, they were the first to offer electronic tax processing on the web. It was a smart move being the first ones as they gained quite a bit of money from stock sales at this time last year. You don't have to worry about these people.

i tried using HDVest but i found i got more return using quicken's turbotax online. if you make more than 25k and use 1040EZ its a $7 fee. i suggest signing up for both, filling out both forms and see which one gives you the best return. i got over $300 more back with quicken.

hdvest.com not secure? I tried to use this site and I know that there is a lock on screen when you sign and and they say they use ssl but I do not see a lock at the bottom of my screen. Anybody check into this? Are they actually secure or not?
