Never switch your pet food cold turkey.. that is, if you decide to change brands, start by putting a little of the new stuff in with a lot of the old stuff and gradually over 7-10 days phase out the old stuff.. If you don't you can constipate the dog, give him diarreah, or possibly give him digestion problems...
Well said, RDMustang1. I raise and show AKC champion Shetland Sheepdogs, and use nothing but premium dog foods. Have been feeding Purina's Pro Plan series, and the coats and general health on my dogs has been outstanding.Originally posted by: RDMustang1
Purina is one of the better "grocery brand" dog foods but it's not going to be nearly as good for the dog in terms of health or waste but it will be quite a bit cheaper..
In reality all dog owners should feed a "premium quality" dog food which until recently has only been sold in pet stores (IAMS has recently decided to start marketing its foods in grocery stores).. If you truely want your dog (or cat) to be as healthy as possible (not to mention product MUCH less stool) then try feeding a premium quality food which any pet store can recommend for your particular dog...
If you do insist on feeding your pet a lower quality food then purina or pedigree make some of the better grocery quality foods but still won't do what any premium brand dog food will do..
But, now that I *think* of it, I believe Purina does have a line of Premium food they sell (but I know they sell multiple lines of grocery brand)... Not sure if they are offering their premium or grocery brand in this offer...

The poop thing really is true, too, guys. You feed anything out of the grocery store and you'll be pickin' up 2x the amount out of the yard. For me, that's a big consideration! Stick with either the Iams or go to the pet store and pick up something decent - Science Diet, Nature's Recipe, etc.
BTW, if you want to see some fine Shelties, go take a look at: Glenesk Shelties

Interesting thread. Amazing what I learn here at AnandTech! I had no idea about the less poop thing from premium foods. If that really is true, then I'm definitely going to switch my dogs to premium food. Less time spent picking up dog poo for me is a good thing!
