And I've got 2 free poochs for your food. Just come get them. Good dogs actually but a bit on the dumb side. Left by the previous owner of the house.

Edit - Heck, I'll give ya a 50lb bag and deliver in La.

Never switch your pet food cold turkey.. that is, if you decide to change brands, start by putting a little of the new stuff in with a lot of the old stuff and gradually over 7-10 days phase out the old stuff.. If you don't you can constipate the dog, give him diarreah, or possibly give him digestion problems...

Hey RD, I learned that one the hard way... We got a Lab puppy last monday, and he had the old runs something awful for about 4 days straight. I would have felt bad for him, but he kept letting it go in the house!!! I might try a bag o' free stuff on him just to see how it does... Right now he is on the good old Puppy Chow!

Thanks nuxto!

Purina is one of the better "grocery brand" dog foods but it's not going to be nearly as good for the dog in terms of health or waste but it will be quite a bit cheaper..

In reality all dog owners should feed a "premium quality" dog food which until recently has only been sold in pet stores (IAMS has recently decided to start marketing its foods in grocery stores).. If you truely want your dog (or cat) to be as healthy as possible (not to mention product MUCH less stool) then try feeding a premium quality food which any pet store can recommend for your particular dog...

If you do insist on feeding your pet a lower quality food then purina or pedigree make some of the better grocery quality foods but still won't do what any premium brand dog food will do..

But, now that I *think* of it, I believe Purina does have a line of Premium food they sell (but I know they sell multiple lines of grocery brand)... Not sure if they are offering their premium or grocery brand in this offer...

Well said, RDMustang1. I raise and show AKC champion Shetland Sheepdogs, and use nothing but premium dog foods. Have been feeding Purina's Pro Plan series, and the coats and general health on my dogs has been outstanding.

The poop thing really is true, too, guys. You feed anything out of the grocery store and you'll be pickin' up 2x the amount out of the yard. For me, that's a big consideration! Stick with either the Iams or go to the pet store and pick up something decent - Science Diet, Nature's Recipe, etc.

BTW, if you want to see some fine Shelties, go take a look at: Glenesk Shelties

I only feed my doggie California Natural. It's $30 for a 36-pound bag ($0.83 / lb). I figure that's less than half the price-per-pound for typical pork chops or chicken, so why not spend the dough? She also eats less. Thanks for the post though.

once saw an interview with the guy who ran purina, he said dog food wsant made for dogs, it was made for peopel. if a dog had its choice it would live on road kill. If your serious about whats best for your dog do some research on the barf diet (bones and raw food). Most peopel dont have the time or motivation to do what is best for the animal but only what is generally accepted :-(.

The American Pet Institute has a really informative article on dog food (linked).

Whats Really in Pet Food?

Based on the ingredients, Purina One looks to be as good as many of the premium brands such as Iams or Eukanuba. But after reading the API article and evaluating the ingredients in various premium brands, I stick with either Bil-Jac Select dry or Innova dry for my border collies.

Bil-Jac
Innova

Edited: forgot to say thanks for the post. I'll get this & mix it in with my dogs regular food.

Interesting thread. Amazing what I learn here at AnandTech! I had no idea about the less poop thing from premium foods. If that really is true, then I'm definitely going to switch my dogs to premium food. Less time spent picking up dog poo for me is a good thing!

very true, also what many people mistake as flea allergies and dermatitus are actually allergies to the grain in the dog food, wheat and rice are not natural food for dogs.

another thing about commercial dog foods in the presence of pentobarbital, the drug used to put dogs to sleep, somehow euthanized animals are finding thier way into commercial dog food supply :-(

lol,
Don't know for sure if a premium food will save you cleanup time, but I can vouch for the fact that it makes the job less offensive. Never paid attention to whether premium foods reduce the number of doggie 'buisness trips' but I can guarantee they'll lead to a significant improvement in poo quality (smaller amount and alot firmer). As Joe Walsh said: "...pick up the dog doo, hope that it's hard."

(maybe I shouldn't use the word 'guarantee'; don't want anyone expecting me to come over & pick up their dogs poo if they don't see the expected benefits!)
