Establishment has to pay them base pay. Tips should help them recover some cost.

example - If my wifes glass gets empty, not only do I go to the kitchen and get the refill my self, the server does not get a tip.

I won a free dinner for 8 at Noodles and Company (their business card drawing). And it was quite the impressive meal, and the woman who was serving us was just a regular employee (and they don't normally wait on people, it is just a "here is your food" place, so only a small step up from a regular fast food style) and she did a fantastic job. So I left a decent tip for our free meal just because she did a lot more than her job requirements would have said, and I think that is worthy of a tip.

this is the reason nobody wants to go to dinner with my dad: hes an annoying prick in an restaurant.

A double tip is common and pretty standard fare in this situation.

Hopefully for the health/intestinal safety of the people you love that have no culpability in the fact that you are a rogue cheap/no tipping asshole, you never eat in the same place twice after pulling that shit.
