very nice deal. does anyone know if ubuntu has a windows autorun which can make you bootdisks? xandros 3 can do it. my motherboard's cmos resets at every startup so i can't set first boot priority to my drive and must use a bootdisk to install anything before windows starts up. i looked around the site, but couldn't find any information.

I've changed the cmos battery on my main rig, just as a precaution (probably waste of money), but I've never heard of these batteries dying. I have some Pentium 200 machines around my house (probably 10~12 years old) and they boot up fine. Yes, they have the original batteries that came with them.

Yes, Free linux CD(s), not requiring it to be downloaded (on your time) and the potentially burned to a cd (that you provide at your expense, and additional time), mailed to you, without even the cost of shipping.

I am in for 1 of each. (ppc, x86, x86-64bit)

I think out of decency, people should stop ordering EVERYTHING. They're doing this for free, linux is free, etc. etc. Stop creating costs that only burden the community. If you need x86, great, if you neeed PPC, that's fine too. But unless you have a legitimate reason for ordering all of these, please don't. They end up as costers at your house anyway. I'm not going to order any since I can download it anyway.

Question is, is it really worth it to incur costs to the linux community vs. paying maybe 10-20 cents out of my own pocket?

Just got mine. I ordered Mac and PC versions, since I use both.

And i think it *is* worth it to get more than one each, since I head the tech department for a small nonprofit. I'm going to use these to convince my organisation to switch to linux, and having a live, professional-looking CD and sleeves for demo purposes is priceless. Having extra copies means I can mail them to people and distribute it, or even hand them out at a linux promotion event in Varanasi, assuming I can organise one in time.

The possibly gains in terms of Linux converts (especially given that my organisation is in the education business, and this would influence the technologies being taught and the syllabi developed) seems worth far more than the cost of these CD's.

Mine, too, were shipped from Europe...

I agree that you should not order everything just because you can. But when I went to order one the default order was set at 10 for the PC. And it says:
"How many CDs do you want?
Since shipping will often be more than the cost of the CDs, please feel free to request multiple CDs to give away and share with friends."
Besides there will always be people that abuse the system.
The first link did not work, so I hope this is the same thing.

Mine came, eventually. Not as robust as Knoppix and failed to detect my second processor.

I ordered 12 - 10 @386, 2 @64. Plan on giving extras to some friends. As far as ordering these, assume UBUNTU wants you to order more rather than less to help spread adoption of their product. That said, now I feel guilty...

Noob question: how expensive and resource intensive (using the company's bandwith / server) is dowloading a file like this? (600MB, taking 20 - 30 minutes using broadband.) Honestly, I am interested - in the spirit of community, and thankful for UBUNTU's offer.
