Yeah, graphite and lead. Hint, dont chew on the lead part of the pencil. The wood part is ok though

Just in case anyone's wondering, the center of a typical pencil -- technically known as the writing core -- is a blend of graphite and clay. There's no lead. Nothing poisonous.

But while it may be safe to chew on a pencil, it's not the most attractive of habits. So don't do it. (This message brought to you by the Association of Concerned Citizens Committee on the Elimination of Such Habits as Public Expectoration, the Chewing of Gum in the Manner of a Cow Chewing Its Cud, and Baseball Players Who Scratch Certain Body Areas During the Playing of the National Anthem.)(The ACCCESHPECGMCCCBPWSCBADPNA cares about making the world a nicer place.)

A Frenchman named Conte, I beleive, invented the use of graphite mixed with clay for writing while he was working for Napoleon. Napoleon needed better ways to seat cannon balls in the barrel, graphite was a popular choice. Graphite is now used for many things... but still as a dry "lubricant" on such items as bearings and other metal on metal contact points, just like Napoleon's cannon amunition.
