Grappa....the chicks that are picked up because of shiny tires are best avoided anyways

Oh, You are sadly mistaken my friend. You better shine those tires a little better.

SYF3R,you're probably right about Draino-I mean Zaino being a good product, but I have never heard of it 'till now and the Meguiars products feed and nourish the paint to revitalize oxidized finishes.I even use this stuff on my guitars as most Guitar techs and music stores do.No offence syf3r,I just trust the Meguiars stuff on my finishes but will look for info on the Zaino just out of curiosity.

zaino is a polymer, not a wax. it's 99.9% optically clear, and bonds with the paint finish to remove all swirls and preserve the paint and clearcoat. since it's not a wax, there's no white dust left over in the detailing after you remove it. believe what you want, but if you've never used zaino you should try it. i've used both zaino and meguiars, and the zaino lasts *way* longer. 4 months after applying 3 coats my car still looks like i applied it yesterday (and this is with a drought here in new jersey, so my car hasn't been washed in those 4 months). anyway, i'm not here to start a fight over something as stupid as car wax. believe what you want even if you haven't tried them both for comparison.

tedtalker:

ahh.. looks like someone took a peek at the photogallery they have on their website, eh? pretty amazing, huh?

what i use might be different from what you need... my car is pretty new, and is clearcoated (most cars are anyway).. i skipped the z-1 and z-7 and just washed my car thoroughly with dawn dishwashing liquid (not recommended as your every-time soap, but dawn dishwashing liquid has a high alkalinity and it will totally strip off any existing wax that's on your car). i started with 2 coats of the z-5 to get rid of fine swirls and any little scratches in the clearcoat... then i applied a coat of z-5. it was still a lot cooler out when i did this, so it took most of a weekend to do the 3 coats. even with a couple drops of the ZFX fast curing agent it took a few hours to cure.

a few things i've found out after doing a full treatment:
1. wait for a weekend that you can set aside for zaino'ing your car... ideally the temperature should be in the 80's or 90's... if it's too cold out, the polish will be a lot harder to apply.. it will feel like it's curing too fast and won't spread easily (remember, you should be able to do the *whole* hood of your car with 2-3 drops of this stuff).
2. likewise, if it's too hot out it will apply very easily, but it will set very quickly... the thing about zaino is that it feels almost oily when you apply it (it's not oily, it's just that it doesn't dry right away and you can spread it around almost like putting a few drops of vegetable oil on the car. that's what it feels like anyway. a few drops will go a long way because it just keeps spreading and spreading).
3. remember that less is more... a couple drops will do the whole hood.. a couple drops will do the whole rear of the car, etc... DON'T overapply it.. shoot for a real thin coat.
4. follow the websites recommendations for towels.. i found them cheap at bed, bath&beyond. use 100% cotton, white towels or 100% cotton yellow buffing cloth. i used the buffing cloth to buff outt he wax, and the white towels to buff the z-6 gloss spray.
5. you don't need to buff this stuff out when it cures, like you do with regular wax.. you just use a buffing cloth and just rub it off, in straight lines, not circular. once it sets, it rubs right off. you probably won't even break a sweat removing it.

so, to answer your question, i used Z-5, Z-2, ZFX, and Z-6. depending on the size of your car, i used 1oz of the z-5 with 2 drops of ZFX in it.. that gave me almost 3 coats on my car.. then i used about 1/3oz of Z-2 without the ZFX and let it cure overnight before buffing it out. after removing that final coat, my car literally looked like if i touched it it would ripple.

ted,

if you've got a clearcoat on there, then the Z-2 should be fine... but I would suggest starting with at least 3 coats of Z-5 before Z-2. make sure you strip off any existing wax first. you shouldn't layer this stuff over carnauba wax and regular waxes... but you *can* layer any zaino product over any other zaino product.

Zaino isn't that exciting according to this site: http://pages.sbcglobal.net/gheumann/zaino_test/
There was another site that had test results, but they are no longer up.

Maybe it's superior in its own way, but for $70, it better last as long as the car.

Ahh..
Zaino

It is simply the best. Once you use Zaino, you never go back. Easy on, Easy Off.

You know your Polishes

GnatGoSplat

Don't go by that webpage. He applied one coat of Z5 and expected it to wipe his swirl marks away. Takes more than one coat. Not to mention he never used the Z2. The good news is that as someone else mentioned that 1 ounze will do 3 or more coats.. I have a Black Grand Am GT. If anyone has ever owned a black car, they know that swirl makrs are very noticeable on them. Not anymore...

Another Polish/Wax test...

Check out any car forums and you will see people swear by Zaino. I learned about it one day when I was just browsing the Dodge Viper Forum for something to do.

The $50 you would spend on zaino is well worth it. Compare Zaino to what you would have to do if you use say Meguiars... MeGuiars tells you you need to apply their product monthly! Meaning it just does not last. The shine does not last, the protection does not last. I used to use MeGuiars. I have a whole stash of it sitting around collecting dust.

Zaino lasts. I have had total stangers walk up to me in a parking lot months after applying Zaino to ask me what I use on my car. Even in the dead of winter.

The UV40 Sun protection in his products is another bonus.

To keep this post from getting out of hand, I direct you to the following thread on a car forum I post on as "VaGT".

I would also reccomend using a clay bar. You would be surprised at what you will pick up from even a finish you think is clean. I did it on a 4 month old car and was amazed. You can get a clay bar from Zaino, or Walmart ect sells Mother's brand which makes a good clay bar.

Just to add something that syf3r left out. If you don't get the ZFX you have to use Z1, and wait longer between coats.

After using Meguiars for a few years (4 times a year, with once a year doing a full clay treatment, then a three step polish and wax), I finally bit the bullet and did the Zaino thing a couple of weeks ago to try to hide some swirl marks in my black car that I'd been getting gradually for the last couple of years but that the Meguiars wouldn't get out without using a high speed buffer. All I can say is I'm very impressed with the Zaino. Very impressed. I worked in a detail shop through high school, and haven't seen anything any better, at least initially. The jury is still out on how well it lasts, but it hid my swirls and has one of the slickest feels I've ever seen. (Shine is a tossup, never had a problem with Meguiars shine, it just didn't last as long as I liked).

Meguiars is good stuff, but Zaino seems great. All the online car groups seem to show a lot of people favoring it. Most will have to order it from Zaino Brothers online, and they don't have online ordering (have to mail a form), but it is a very good product if you take the time to use it right.'

Also, to get back on topic, this Meguiars tire stuff is very good. It lasts very well, although the shine isn't as wet looking as some (which is a good thing for my tastes).

There are places online ot order with a CC.

I ordered from here (Even though I don't have a corvette haha). Two orders without problems. Both shipped fast.

http://www.cau-llc.com/zaino.htm

However, they pulled the page down, so I think that they may have run short. They charge $0.05 more than Zaino (They round up), and UPS shipping is $5.

I think you will be happy with the longevity of the Zaino. I am. MeGuiars has this thing on their page where they reccomend you do certain things. If you want to keep your car looking good most of the time, they say to use thier products monthly... Waxes melt off in the hot sun, or wash off in 3-4 car washings.

BTW. Did you get the Z6? ...That stuff is awesome.

Yeah, I got Z6. I ordered Z1, Z2, Z3 (for my non-clearcoated Syclone), Z5, Z6, and Z7. I used clay I already had, a coat of Z1, then did 4 coats of Z5 to hide the swirls, with two coats of Z2 to finish it off. I used the Z6 between coats as recommended. I don't know if I needed that many coats to hide the swirls, but it did the trick. I was doing it inside at night after work, so couldn't really see how many coats I needed.

BTW, don't let the number of coats scare people away from this stuff. This goes on and off as easy as anything I've used. The closest thing I can compare it too is Liquid Glass for easy on, easy off.

Thanks for the order link. I bookmarked it for the next time I need some. I seriously procrastinated for about a year because I was too lazy to do a paper form order He needs to set him up a yahoo store or something

the Z-6 is good stuff, but it's really easy to introduce streaks with it if you overapply it.. you should do a small square at a time as you do the whole car, and use a clean towel to rub it off... and while the other zaino products like Z-2 and Z-5 smell REAL good, the Z-6 smells like cough syrup
my car is also black, and real hard to keep clean. one tip for polishing a black car with zaino is to remove the polish in straight lines... on the hood, remove it in straight lines from windshield to nose... on the sides, remove it in straight lines vertically from top to bottom, not sideways along the length of the car. i was skeptical when i heard that, but it really does make a difference.

(the zaino "headquarters" is about 30 minutes from where i work)
