yeah I didn't know that it used VoIP too. From my understanding though, Google talk seems to only have peer to peer voice chat with other computer users. However they did say that they would be adding more features soon, and that "talk should be free". So this could make it interesting. God bless Google, they give is over 2gigs of email storage, a great search engine, and a ton of other free services, all without obnoxious ads! How do they do it?!

Is there a minimum upload requirement for the VoIP to sound clear?

I'm talking to my gf (I'm at home in Cary, NC; she's at MIT in Cambridge, MA). I'm using roadrunner...upload is capped at about 50kb/s...mit's is like...>1MB/s. I can hear her REALLY clearly, but I sound horribly garbled.

Anyway when we talk on AIM, the quality is ok (she can hear me, i can hear her) but there's a significant amount of lag.

Any ideas as to what's up?

You should try Skype, it's THE BEST free voip IM client.

How do you add buddies in gaim? I did 'Add buddy', but i think i am doing it wrong. The buddy comes up as 'not authorized'.

What do you guys think about the speculations that google will buy Skype?

Skype has a nice IM feature that allows you to change your status to "invisible". No one can tell if you're online, but they can still send you messages and you can respond. That's the ONLY thing I like about Skype IM. Do you know if any other IM clients have that feature?

AIM, GAIM, and Trillian all do invisible mode as well.

If Google can vastly improve Skype then I'm all for it but I doubt it.

I installed AIM, but I can't find any way to prevent my buddies from knowing that I'm signed "on", or "away" or "idle" (whatever they mean).

FYI, any audio sent via the internet in realtime can be considered VoIP (hense the name VOICE over INTERNET PROTOCOL).

Minimum upload depends on the technology used. If it's proprietary, open, what codecs are used, etc. Uncompressed voice uses roughly 64kbps (PCM) so i'd say if you have at least that for an upload speed, you should be fine.

I can't answer these questions yet because I have no one to test it out on. I plan to play with this further. Will let you know if you like.
