So, the salesperson on the other end never gets through to you. As your number is eliminated from more and more lists those annoying computer dialed telemarketing calls are virtually stopped altogether.

Hmm, maybe I am a bit slow, but I am confused by this. It will only emit this tone when it detects a telemarketer? (How will it know when it is not a friedn for instance?)

Also, the sight looks a little sketchy, not that that really means a whole lot.

No, what you do is record this tone onto your answering machine, and then after it record your message. your friends will still here the tone, but so what?

Or you could just politely say to the person on the other line to take you off their calling list

Better than the teleZapper is your states No Call List. Do a search on Google and see if your state has one. Here in TN it's a toll free call to get on the list or you can do it on the web. No more solicitors calling in the middle of ANYTHING! And my friends and family don't have hear any special tones. If your state doesn't offer a no call list then this Telezapper is for you!

I'll vouch for the no call list, ever since I put my # on we have yet to get one call from a telemarketer.

See this list of states with no call lists.

CA has one, but they delayed starting it up until sometime next year. It will cost $1/phone number for 3 years.

IIRC, I read the other day that the FTC is starting a national Do Not Call list.

Starting 1/1/03 is a nationwide do not call list, funded by lawsuits against telemarketers. It'll be advertised nationally as well, and stricly adhered to because it'd literally be a federal offense to violate it.

I don't know if "improved" telezapper is as appropriate as "Poor Man's Telezapper."
The "real" telezapper will play the tone everytime you answer the phone, and you don't have to use your answering machine to screen the calls.

After all....if you screen your calls, a telezapper is redundant...

I'm curious about the "Telezapper". Seems like the *real* one just hangs up on telemarketers after first ring...is that correct and you hear that *one* ring*?? If not, it sounds like that feature would result in "hangups" (ie: got no caller-id, so I walked all the way over to the phone, answered the phone and it immediately hung-up on them (and me). That'd be a pain

FWIW I downloaded this and saved it to my answering machine and it does appear that lately I've been receiving fewer telemarketer calls. The only calls that I can't seem to avoid are the asian telemarketers! Every day it seems like I get at least one asian person leaving me a message trying to get me to switch my long distance, and they talk so fast that I can't even understand what they're saying anyways. One day I accidentally picked up the phone and got one of them, so I hung up on him. The SOB called me back 6 times right after leaving messages!!! Grrr they are the WORST, I'm thinking about changing my last name to Smith...

Yes, a "real" Telezapper will cause a hangup after the first ring, usually. The Caller-Id usually shows "UNKNOWN" here, although one time it showed up 000-000-0000. (How they did that, I have no idea... hacking the phone system?)

I imagine that eventually- telemarketing systems will change somehow to get around the fake disconnected signal . . .

This beep works for me. I put this at the beginning of my answering machine message, very unobtrusive, and my telemarketer calls went from about five per day to about one every other day. I'm a believer. I found this information by using Google and searching for something called the "sit.wav."
